1st - 2nd Crunching on MY96
Hi,
I have noticed just recently after long motorway work, that when changing between 1st - 2nd it is nearly impossible to stop a crunching sound/grating sound from gearbox. I know the earlier model cars suffered from this but it seems to be more noticeable lately.
Any ideas what I should be checking ? Gearbox oil ?, Clutch ? and will a quickshift help or hinder this problem.

try changing slowly.. and see what happens.... mine does it.. if I try and go quick.. but Im just waiting for the box to die... then Ill replace it with something special

Sounds like the syncros to me! I had this problem with the Saxo and it was taking over a second to make a smooth 1st - 2nd change at high revs. I argued for ages with Citroen to get it changed and finally they did and the new gearbox works perfectly. Quickshift would probably make it much worse I'd have thought, less time for the syncro to do its thang.

Any ideas how much to get synchro replaced or is it a new gearbox ?

Is your clutch operating as it should? Also, a change of oil can sometimes work wonders. I have used Castrol SMX gear oil in a couple of subarus with crunchy changes ( fast driving ) and it did stop crunching afterwards. Maybe some of the redline oli people rant and rave about could be even better

So fitting a quickshift is probably a bad idea, what with the syncro looking like it might be getting weak ? .... **** ! I have already ordered one before I noticed problem getting worse .... typical or what.

I have recently had 2nd, 3rd and 4th syncro rings replaced, a bearing and baulk ring on my MY98 at a cost of £480.The labour to remove and refit g/box at a local garage was £120.By holding off the repair damage could occur on gear teeth and this could prove more costly.Try using Redline 74W90NS,as recommended to me by Graham Goode(not cheap though)this may help if syncro not badly worn.

i'll give you an update when the gearbox is back in if changing the syncros has made a difference, mine has been like it for almost a year, makes 0-60's very difficult

£40 and a refill with Castrol Syntrax sorted it for me. Best £40 I've ever spent on a car.
I bet a gearbox company wouldn't tell you that tho'.

He changed the oil. Must have paid someone to do it, hence, £40 + the oil... Depending on the oil in the box, it can remove the crunchy changes. Obviously it isnt a real fix, but its a lot cheaper than stripping the box, and will probably last a very long time before needing synchros etc replaced.
£40 was for the oil. Changed it myself (I could of worded my post a little better).
It's not a cheap fix, it's replacing oil that has had it's day and in accordance with the service schedule. A cheap fix it putting Slick50 or other such products in.

If it's gonna improve things it should be different straight away.
But don't expect it to be totally cured for a week or so. The new oil may need time to clean any of the old s-h-i-t-e out of the synchro's.
