I was wondering how much more BHP could safely be released (without rebuilding the engine etc. and without running the risk of an engine meltdown) from the standard UK scoob (got a 2000MY). Most common mods seem to be 1 cat (if you want the car to remain legal), induction kit, chip and back box. Whats the average increase after all this?

Tried a search but unfortunately its not available at the moment. Warranty is not an issue so non-prodrive options are acceptable.

 

Just got my car back today MY99 UK 24K miles full decat unichip and dawes on near std boost, 241bhp & 240lbft @ 3000rpm.

cost 1500quid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

276bhp and 281ftlb from my MY98 Terzo (measured on the RR at InterPro near Bristol)

This was with a Unichip, Magnex de-catted downpipe, Magnex backbox and JR filter. Since then I've fitted an induction kit, but don't know if it has made any difference to the figures - certainly alters the noise and the pick-up when pressing the go faster pedal.

Everthing else engine wise is standard.

My understanding about things is that it is fairly easy to get these sort of increases for relatively modest outlay. It is when you desire more power that it becomes very expensive for little more gains (ie FMIC, pistons, injectors etc.)

First of all - MODERATORS - is this a commercial posting above - or do they have a banner ad?

Secondly - what is safe - 0bhp - and engine that isn't used. Engines wear out - big power probably means more wear. What about the driver - a driver with poor mechanical sympathy and a poor service/care record will destroy a standard engine faster than a good driver will with a 300bhp plus engine driven hard.

The 'biggest' standard UK engine I am aware of put out 356bhp at Power Engineering - although the driving characteristics were compromised due to enormous turbo.

I would imagine 300bhp to be reasonable if you modify well - over 300bhp possible but at risk due to potential wear at high revs due to heavier pistons than the STi engines.

No I didn't supply Peccy's exhaust, all I said is that we have a kit available for all imprezas which gives good gains, safely, effectively and relativly cheaply. This is our first performance package for the impreza and is aimed at owners wishing to have a no worries car. No high power figures, just honest mods.

How are your mods doing Adam?

Im not discussing any of my mods on thread but please email me for details of what's happening with the STi UK and other imprezas.

To trout, by 'safe' I was asking for mods that wouldnt compromise the reliability of my scoob unduly. Obviously, Im aware that more power = higher wear but as I look after my car (regular main dealer servicing, careful driving while the engine warms etc) and would continue to do so after any mods, I was hoping to get info relating to upgrades which wouldnt require a new engine every few months.

My basic target (if attainable, which many threads seem to indicate is feasible) is an 85 BHP increase (subaru claim 215 BHP for the standard UK scoob so 215 + 85 = the magic 300 BHP mark). If anyone has achieved this and done so reliably, I will be very interested to know how it was done and what the mods on their cars are.

I am not sure what your post means - my car has around 350bhp - has done 40k miles in its variously tuned states and has done over 1000 track miles (and those who have been out with me on track will vouch that I don't drive slowly!)

So what do you mean by safe?

By the way - the only failure on my car to date has been the oil spreader that was attached to the third gear wheel - it shattered when I missed a gear on track and smashed it into third. That would have happened with or without the mods.

Anyway - I am puzzled by your post - over three years and no new engine required.

Well I’m new to this tuning game, but this is what I plan:-

ITG Filter (got that – it’s easy)
De-cat exhaust (I’m planning a scoobySport DP to match the back box I’ve already got)
Dawes boost controller (but soon to be removed for -)
Tek2 ECU

That won’t get you 300 bhp but probably a nice reliable 270ish with loads of torque to match. John B had some suggestions under the PPP v Tek2 thread.

 

You can run 300 reliably no problem at all.

at least not much worse than the standard car.

considering that a classic imported wrx ran 276bhp from factory, and as yet the only difference we can see between that engine and the UK engine is the ecu and the size of turbo. No internal difference at all!

So, realistically, running 300bhp is only 20bhp up on the standard that subaru release the engine with (and thats running 100ron but it is standard with no mods).

So, ecu remap and at least TD05/VF22/VF23 turbo should see you at 280, then planned exhaust mods, you should hit the 300 mark.

Remember that 300 is stretching the limit of 380 injectors, so only version 4 cars or my99 uks onwards are safe above this as standard.

I now think the most important and intelligent mod is to uprate the fuel pump. Before doing anything else it does not changhe mixture at all, but makes sure that when the ecu does request more fuel, it is there!

peccy are you saying that jamie modded your car? or simply supplied you with a de cat exhaust pipe? It is not clear.
