Default Airbox Inner wing snorkel removal ?

On a classic, any benefit from removing the entire wing snorkel system and just leaving the airbox with it sucking in air from the inner wing without the snorkel, noise wise or torque wise ?

Anybody done it ?

Cheers

Basically, removing all this, this all sits in the inner wing and air gets sucked in thru the white box at the top, my plan is to remove all this and have air dirctly sucking in thru the airbox thru the wing, its high up enough not to get any water sucked in and also the wheel arch liner is in place

yeah easy to do. if you don't like it its not too difficult to put back. From memory think its two fixing at top and one at bottom. model year is 2000
I also blocked off hole in inner wing and took the plastic trunking of the front panel

I remember from a long time ago there was a post on here where somebody put their car on the rollers with and without and they found that removing the snorkel lost bhp. However it was a tiny tiny amount. I would go as far as to say it makes no difference that you will notice other then noise.

cheers guys, yeah, i can cope with a bhp or 2 loss, like you say, a strong headwind loses you some ponies ha, its mapped anyway so ive a few more than stock lol.

Will remove, test the noise and see if any issues, i can always put it all back, my goal here is to stick with standard Airbox yet get the turbo flutter noise when i block my dumpvalve off, i have the TD05 so its strong enough to cope, i hope .

will test and report back

So, Snorkel / resonator removed, now the question, do i just leave it sucking air direct from wing, as in this pic ( with a bit of sealant to make a tight fit )

Or do i say, cut off the black snorkel from this pic and attach it so i have the bit that points forward towards the sidelight (where it gets fresh air from i dont know as theres no direct feed ha )

Im thinking direct into wing for better noise and induction roar
cheers

its been a long time since I did mine, I think I got a plastic elbow to fit into airbox from B&Q. But you could chop up resonator if your happy with the noise. I know I wouldn't put mine back in now.

cheers guys, well, since i didnt see any point in having a bent elbow as there isnt a direct air flow anyway into the snorkel as the headlight/sidelight etc are all in the way, i just fitted a straight piece of tube into the airbox like so, look forward to hearing her roar ha ha

What is the result? What is the Intake Air Temperature now? I want to get cold air from the inner wing because my IAT is always 10 Celsius above the temperature outside and I think it causes detonations...

Thanks for your reply, I plan to make the mod these days and I will post here if I can have temperatures as the outside temp. - that is my purpose...

I have a blob wrx and no resonator (airbox draws straight from inner wing) has always been like this.
You do get a fair bit of sand/dust in the bottom of the airbox, it is a dirty environment after all. Some of that will make it's way past panel air filters like simota/K&N.
I was looking at putting two 90's on mine and routing it back under te bonnet onto the original air inlet jobbie that draws from the grill area.

I wouldn't try to modify anything if mine was getting cold air from the grill area. But I have a Forester and it gets air from inside the engine compartment... hot air...

From what I see now, the intake temp is only 3 celsius degrees higher than outside temp - compared to 10 degrees more before when the air was taken from engine compartment.

Harvey tested this way back when and found removing the snorkle did lead to a reduction in bhps...

on my bug I just snipped the snorkel box off but left the main pipework in place so the airbox was drawing in from either the front scoop. Worked well until I decided I really needed the open mushroom filter but I might yet switch back!
