Bit of help needed please.
Im tidying up my engine bay and want to hide as many cables/wires as possible. has anyone done this and have any info on how to do it?
im think of cutting the loom and extending the wires in a neater fashion to the desired location to plug back in.
any info will be greatly appriciated, a diagram on what cable ges where would be great also.. Thanks in advance

 

No way would I be introducing any NEW connectors into a Scoob wiring, the wiring is bad enough without.

Solder and heat shrink, better than any connector.

 

Quite right.......but better still not to interfere with wires.

Then:
NO dry-soldered joints,
NO water ingress,
NO unsightly heatshrink.

 

Not really going to get a dry solder on two twisted inner cores.
Joints will be hidden away nice and neat. Kind if the idea of this little project lol

Your telling me a soldered joint like this is bad?! Obviously with Heat shrink covering it.

 

Soldered joints are fine, with heatshrink.

BUT: Many people cannot solder properly and dry-soldered joints are the result, joints which then cause an intermittent fault which is a b@stard to find!

Secondly, the flux from the soldering can cause the wires to corrode later.

Thirdly, the heatshrink isn't as waterproof as the original wire covering.

Fourthly, some people leave "tags" on soldered joints, sharp points then pierce the heatshrink and you have a live wire.

If you MUST join wires, it's the way to do it, but I'd not be joining anything that didn't need it, you are asking for trouble.

In the end, your car, your choice.

 

I'm very experienced with electircal components, pcb'd etc etc.
I can use something that won't corrode, and I use a heat shrink that has glue inside of it, making it completly waterproof

 

Just solder them and hit them with flux remover spray (RS Components sell it) then heat shrink with the glue lined stuff like you say. Stick them all inside flexible conduit and all should be well depending on skill levels.

It's not just for the sake of it mate, it's to run the loom differently to hide them to get a nice clean bay mate.

I don't see what the problem is, people on here do many weird and wonderful things to their cars and a lot of it is just for the hell of doing it and making their car the way they want it. If the guy wants to clear out and tidy up the engine bay then so be it!

 

Fair enough, i get that its for the look of it. Problem is when you get an electrical gremlin theres nothing worse.
Personally i get one made by Tim at JT innovations, his work is tip top!

 

Appreciate problems can occur when retro fitting cables but my target completion date is spring 2016. Allows plenty of checking, double checking and checking again
I would get something made for me joe but im a firm believer of, if you can do it yourself then do it. So with my experience with electricals I should find this a walk in the park.

Not unless absolutely necessary...to splice bits in if needed, etc.

Otherwise, I'd not do it. Why start bodging something that works well enough, just to make it look better, when most folk will never see it?

People prob won't see it but I will, I'll know what work and how many hours I put in to it to make it mine and different from every other Classic!

 

"Bodged": changed in some way from normal, when not necessary, not standard.

 

So I'm planning on putting a blob eye front bumper on my classic, that's a bodge too!!

But it's more a modification, as it CAN'T detract...it works as well as the old.
