First, figure out if what you want to achieve from it, and work out the cost and see if it would be cheaper to buy an STI first.

If not, then the first basic sensible mods are panel filter, 2.5" exhaust, remap, maybe an STI Intercooler, then move on to suspension (JDM STI pink standard shocks are perfect) but if you want to go low, a good coilover kit, anti lift kit. Upgrade to STI Brembos for the brakes..again see the trend - put STI parts on

Phase one
Fuel pump, air filter, decat, remap, drop links, arbs, strut braces......
Phase two
Gets expensive....

Strut braces and drop links? sheer waste of money , the Impreza is rigid enough for the road, and the standard drop links are more than up to the job unless your chasing big power or track use

If you're staying with the standard calipers then first mod is better brake fluid and brake hoses!

- from experience.
