well as the title says. i just bought a ver3 STI this weekend from england and well i wanted to take a look at the engine. Well when i took the cam covers off there are L3EX R3EX etc. are stamped in the cams. on all of the 4 cams are metal poulies attachted also the cam covers have 16 valve written on it. so it starting to think the engine came out of an earlier version? is there a way to see the difference between a EJ20K and EJ20G? because i also have the IS 22611 AC720 ecu. the rest of the engine is i think quickly put together a wrx ex. manifold, open uppipe, td05 and some other stuff.

From your description, it sounds like a Version 2 engine you have.
Does it have hydraulic lifters ( you wont be able to get a feeler gauge between the bucket and cam lobe base ) or over bucket shim ?

Steel cam pulleys are generally found on Version 1~2 engines unless retro fitted.
What head gaskets are fitted - multi layer steel or carbon composite ?

hey i made some pictures of the engine. from inside etc. but it doenst got steel gasket. the owner before me did a full rebuild a year ago he said so and i wanted to check as the head didnt belong to the ver3 sti.

Pistons in your pictures are Version 1~2 WRX long skirt 'dog bone' pistons.
STi Version 2 and RA had short skirt 'dog bone' pistons.

Camshafts are not STi.

You should have a line in between the first letter and number to denote STi camshaft.

Are these are v3 sti heads and cams? Would I be correct in saying early sti ra's had square plug cap castings?

These are the heads that came off my V2 sti type RA, I'm not sure they were oe,
