Question

are these systems made to be road legal? i.e. silenced to a set Db level, a bit like motorbike systems

I have spoken to few friends in various Police traffic divisions. The whole noise thing is subjective and there are no regs. This seems to make sense, as a new TVR produces more noise than an Impreza with a full system.

New car regs are a whole different story, but then TVR don't go for type approval, as their market is predominately UK only and, for example, the cars are not road legal in the US.

The ruling is, if you are making so much noise that you are causing a nuisance, then you are nicked. Simple as that.

Most people that do get nicked under noise regs are nicked for their ICE.

I found out recently the new TVRs have an exhaust inside an exhaust and it the air trapped between the collar at the end of the pipe which generates the low bass sound. My mates Tamora is still slightly louder than my scoobysport BB and decatted centre but only just from the outside

If you have a fully decatted system and your car had cats orginally then it will be technically illegal. You will probably get a fix it within 7 days or else notice and then you'll need to find a catted downpipe to swap it out with.

i was refering to the decibel levels more than the cats, was just wondering if they're made to a specific Db level or not i.e. sacrificing performance to keep the car quiet (a bit like the standard system)

I've wondered about this before too. As bike riders will know well, the cops are VERY strict on loud cans on bikes and if your end can is not stamped (something like BSAU193T (or not for road use)) then you are nicked!!!!

Now I would liken a bike with open pipe with a Scoob with full decat system so have always been puzzled how Sccobs (and cars in general) seem to get away with it.

Pete, are you saying that there is no legislation (like for bikes) where aftermaket exhausts have to comply to the noise regs (and in the case of bikes, I think the noise regs are the same to AM as for Type Approval....)).

Tuckshop, any comments?

The rules for bikes are the same as cars, but noisy cars are not perceived to be the same nuisance as noisy bikes so don't get the same attention.

For the road, as said earlier I don't think its a concern but for track use then noise levels are an issue. I believe SS / SM systems don't have a problem as I've passed all dB tests (full SM) however some tracks are more strict than others and noise test procedures can differ somewhat...

Question

Mike,

So do the AM Prodrive exhausts have to meet the same noise regs as for TA and do they have to be stamped with the the relevant BS/EU mark?

Our exhausts have 'e' marks, now you know why

This is an interesting issue, mainly as the Nur Spec R i've fitted is very loud and a few have said that I might get pulled for it. Of course I do carry the bung in the car with me, so I can drop that in as a quick fix.

Thumbs up

But this wouldn’t matter if it was a jap import would it. Because if it did you would have to change things like bulbs, lights in fact most things on the car as it was never meant to be driven in Europe.

So if it is an import all it has to do is pass the SVA test for the cars year, which is ofcourse a whole other can of worms.

Cheers

Ready and waiting to be proved wrong – as per usual.

Question

Thanks Mike.

So the question is, Pete (C), do your exhausts carry the "e" mark (as I presume they have gained approval via testing? ) as I'm sure I recall you saying that they are road legal????

so if you have to make the exhaust road legal, surely you're going to have make some sort of sacrifice to performance
