Just replaced my Bug WRX gearbox with a 70k WRX wagon box after it imploded a few weeks ago while I was out hooning The replacement box felt 10x better and no crunches, no clutch slip, everything seemed fine.

My mate drove me home in it the other night as I'd had a drink, and on the 1/2 mile journey something broke Now I'm not entirely sure what happened as I wasn't completely with it, but I remember hearing a thump from behind me as he changed from 1st to 2nd at 5k and then he told me it wouldn't go into gear and he had to limp it in 3rd.

I've sat in it today and found that 1st won't engage, 2nd goes in fine but doesn't do anything. 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse seem ok and there's no knocking/tapping from the gearbox like I had a few weeks ago when the last one went.

Is there any chance it might just be something wrong with one of the linkages (I'm guessing one for 1st and 2nd, and the other for the rest of the gears?) or am I just going to have to face the fact that I need another f'in gearbox and no money for another month?

Currently running 313bhp and 245/40/18 Vredesteins - not sure if they might be the cause of excessive wear on the transmission as they're very sticky.

Running over 300bhp through one of these boxes is not unheard of but certainly pushing a lot more than they were designed to take. Especially one that's already done 70k.

I think that's your problem.

yeah well into the killer power band at that milageand power. idealy time for an upgrade or proper rebuild

Also, can I just clarify that for a 6 spd conversion I need:

Non-DCCD box up to 2005 blob
Propshaft " "
Cradle
Gearknob
Linkage

Is 6 speed going to be much stronger?

I've emailed the few gearbox specialists local to me, will see what they say but I'm expecting around £800 for a rebuild. There's a gearbox on Ebay for £750 that's only done 14k but it looks like the cars been rolled a few times so maybe not the best idea

 

Would have thought it would survive at that power..... 313 Bhp.. Im putting 320Bhp through my old ty752 box in my classic sprint car.. Its been getting launched off the line for two seasons and hammered round a track. Used on the road as well . Maybe it was already damaged when you got it. Sounds like either 1st and 2nd synchro hub is shot or 2nd gear is stripped. Gearbox specialist normally charge around £200 labour to strip plus parts.

 

Dont forget a six speed weighs about 30Kg more.....

 

And keep use gearbox with the correct rear axle please.... six speeds are good for towards 750+ bhp the clutch isn't !

It sounds like that it could need aligning my advice take it to a specialist for a professional opinion before you start spending anymore money unnecessarily.SJ.

 

I fitted a new Exedy stage 1 clutch from Scoobyworld back in November, which I quite like. When I had crap tyres they would spin a bit when driving hard in the wet, which for some reason ended up burning the clutch out every time. Still struggling to get my head around all this diff malarky Can I fit a bigger clutch if I go 6 spd?

Yeah I thought it should've taken the power but hey, sh*t happens haha
I rarely launch or crunch gears, it just gets driven hard on the rural twisties and I was told that downshifting to 6500rpm despite rev-matching is bad for the gearbox, which is news to me - aren't the cars supposed to be driven to the limit?! Oh well.

I'll see what responses I get from the local gearbox guys, also going to go and see my mate at his garage tomorrow and ask if he recommends anyone.


On a side note - what gearbox oil should I be using? I'm running 10w50 Fuchs Titan Race Pro S engine oil but have been leaving the gearbox oil up to my mechanic so far

Funny I got a 51plate bug with 316bhp and just about to fit my 3rd box they don't seem that strong blew second gear in first box then fitted late box and knackered that good thing is readily try looking on face book subaru parts just got box and rear diff 180 delivered

 

I've just sent my box off to API this morning, getting a recon box from there now and hopefully it'll last a while! It's driven me nuts not having the Scooby for nearly two months now

 

Just bought gear box and diff 180 delivered from scooby parts might get lucky this time don't think they can handle the torque good luck with yours

 

No.... the £300,000 WRC car was... The road version is a sporty car for people to enjoy driving on occasion while still having a practical car. It is not designed to be driven on the limit. It is not designed to have more then the standard amount of power through it. Drive it hard and you will break things eventually it's just a matter of time .
