How much should you have saved? by say 25? 30? 35? and 40?
Teenage is a very crucial time. I hardly heard my every teacher's ramblings in school. History was a siesta time for me, he was so bleddy boring. He was a walking and talking encyclopaedia, but his way of monotone teaching would put a hard core insomniac in sleep!
Education expands knowledge, and there's nothing wrong with expanding your knowledge, is there? Why does every bit you know have to make money, if that's what you mean? If people can play golf or kick a football around for fun, people can study their favourite subjects for fun as well. I can't see any problem with that.
Work is a grim necessity for most people, but of course some people have a huge amount of their 'identity' invested in their job or career; I can see it in some of my friends, pride and ego all dependent upon their status at work. Some are very successful which is natural when failure would lead to such 'ego loss'. They have to keep running but don't know this.
Perhaps a tad over simplified. What if you actually like your job? I love mine and can honestly hand on heart say that even if I won the lottery I would want to carry on working.
Of course if I did win the lottery I would only work about a day a week, but work I would

But it has nothing to do with 'status', I just get a buzz out of what I do and find it interesting.
And again it is not just my ego that is deflated when I don't perform to a level I expect of myself. I'm letting down people who need me to perform to a certain level all the time and that is disappointing.
Even if it were all ego based I'm not sure that is such a bad thing if it pushes me not to fail, my patients ultimately benefit (and I don't get done for manslaughter
)I'm not talking about myself here but we need people who strive for excellence, push boundaries.
Whether they are trying to find a cure for cancer, design a new bridge, catch the terrorist before he kills, it may well be ego that pushes them to do the best job they can. Without people like these humanity would be lost.
My answer to TDW's post (which quoted your post) included my comments on the abnormal parent-to-child attachment, nothing to do with your very reasonable post contents, Jon. You make a good point. When one has a responsibility to feed hungry little mouths, quite obviously one needs to earn a wage for that, and can't afford to be too choosy for what one does to earn that wage.
I'm that thoughtful even towards my cats.
I really miss that buzz one gets from achievement - the sense of satisfaction from a job well done. I know that if my will is strong I can dig myself out of this rut I find I'm in. When I was Mr. Sales I wouldn't have given any space to somebody complaining in the way I have, yet now the shoe's on the other foot. I guess that it's from experiences like this that our capacity for empathy grows.

All good ideas, but I'm fairly fulfilled outside of work; it's the nine hours a day I need to make at best satisfying or at worst tolerable.
Wasn't trying to coach, just nosey.
I have done neither an E class or club class, and might continue to delay those gratifications to avoid midlife crisis. However, you are probably a 24 year old **** star. Maybe religion would help?

Who says doctors don't have a sense of humour, eh?
Hey TH,
All those folk who did not listen in geography about ox-bow lakes are now flooded out. Those of us that listened bought our property on hillsides, well, except for TdW who didn't buy property!

Oh. So, your learning about ox-bow lakes was worth it, then. Good.
But I think TDW cleverly bought a barge for himself, you know. His barge would raise with flood waters, whereas your hilly house could still submerge. He'll be bobbing up and down, up and down in his barge; dragging you guys out of the floods. Think about it.

Never met TDW, so I can't possibly comment tbh. He is the only one who can let us know about that.
LOL now jonc can't say this is a depressing thread with the hilarious level that John Banks has taken it to, and we took advantage of this lightheaded atmosphere. Reading back James's Ducks thread is also a bonus!

Sounds like some sort of weird fetish, doesn't it?
