seriously though i cant see it being cost effective to chuck new pistons in a damaged block.

Agreed, but some people have more money than sense lol
A hone could be done fairly cheaply (new, rings, bearings etc too)
New pistons - new engine, sti.

Dicky ring and a few marks in 1 cylinder, most tuners who have driven or been in the car notice nothing, not even the fact the car shakes to buggery at the lights.
