I usually do my swims early morning - one advantage of working an EST day at the moment I guess! I don't find it that boring, just use the time to keep count and get all the jobs for the day in order in my head.

Top time for a mile! Well done
Sounds like you're aiming for IM.?

Yep- completely killed my immune system for a year after taking almost no rest days. Pretty silly looking back.

Running is quite unpleasant to many but it's intense and so means you don't have to spend long doing it. Minimal kit means not much to buy and you can do it almost any time - I did my coast 5 miler earlier (2000ft of climbing) and did myself in but really enjoyed it.

Just take it easy and do rest well.

My advice would be -
Get yourself a cardiac monitor.
Go down the gym and use a cross trainer a few times a week keeping pulse at 130 bpm for 40 min or so. This way you won't be crippled with Arthritis by the time you are 50. Trance music is helpful here.
Do some weights to get definition as opposed to bulk (and break up the monotony of the session).
Count your calories and run a 1000 Calorie per day deficit, or maybe try the 2:5 diet.
You should be able to drop two pounds a week this way.
Then when you are down to your chosen weight, you can try jogging around with your lighter and fitter body.
"This tape will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Dunk."
Eh? Do you expect runners to run along with a constant smile on their face? How many times did you see Mo Farrah running in the Olympics whilst pi$$ing himself laughing?

The 130bpm advice is wrong. It depends on the person doing it.

The best way to lose weight is to run, run, and run a bit more. The OP said he was trying to lose weight.

There is no point in doing weights if your trying to lose weight. You will not gain definition if you have a big layer of fat over your muscles, hence why you always see big guys down the gym that have no definition. They're bulky, but that's it.........because they do no CV, makes me laugh whenever I see it! They're big, but still have a great set of man-*****!!

Never mind the cardio monitors, cross-trainers, calorie counting etc.

Everybody knows that to lose weight, you need to do plenty of Cardiovascular exercise (along with resting) and to have a healthy, 'balanced' diet. Everybody knows what's good and bad for you in the world of food, and if you don't, a quick google search will tell you everything you need to know.

Hmmm, running spectacular coasts paths (or on Moors or woods, etc) or plodding yoursel to death in an artificially lot gym. Tough choice...

I do weights in the gym but only because they have decent kit. I do stuff at home too with minimal equipment.

It's all good.

On what do you base that on? I base my info on 10 years in the British Army being taught by some of the best physical training instructors probably in the country (including some that have years of experience working at Hedley Court) , competing in numerous Triathlons and probably having done more PT sessions than you've had hot dinners. Ive also just spent 3 months in Cyprus being taught by the best Triathletes in the Army, including weight loss and dietry, but hey, I don't know what I'm talking about. You may have your methods, and that's fair enough, but the advice you gave was wrong.

Don't rise to it.
From someone that's spent a lot of time in the gym but also running outdoors, doing triathlons, etc it's clear you do know what you're talking about.

I don't think the poster is after running triathlons, learning from the army how to kill people or do more PT sessions than eat food or whatever it is you suggest.
He is a 42 year old overweight male who wants to lose weight and (I assume) get fit.
If he wants to jog around looking like a plump turkey giving himself osteo-arthritis in order to fail to achieve his goals, that is his business, but it is not a course of action I would recommend. However I do appreciate that others may beg to differ.
Fair enough if he wants to jog after losing weight, but overweight joggers? - what a pitiful sight.
Out of interest, do you have any personal experience in losing weight?

Forget running for a while at least, your an old bloke that "hasn't ran since school" you'll do yourself a mis-chief and not be able to do **** all for a few months, (if your lucky).

I lost 10kg by doing a warm up routine and then going for a long walk and adjusting my diet, get yourself a cheap heart rate monitor, I got a nike wrist band for £20 and you Can download it on to your computer and go onto the website and plot your progress.

Problem with running (for me at least) is it's high impact and was doing me more harm than good, my left knee would would swell up and be un-useable for a couple of days, between that and the back ache I was almost crippled for 2 days after a run, so did a bit of reading and found i'd be better off walking, as it has less of an impact on your body.

If you want to lose weight you need to put yourself into your fat burning zone and stay there for around 30 min, which for most people is around 120 bpm,
if your not doing that then you'll be pretty much p!ssing in the wind, along with a calorie controlled diet, and dropping carbs, alcohol and sugar.

I do 6 miles a day and adjust depending on how I feel, the important thing is to keep moving, some days I even run now for 3/500m at a time just to keep my heart rate up and because I like to feel some burn but a good marching pace will get you seriously fit and toned, swinging arms helps a lot too.

I stretch and do a bit of an amalgamation of light weights and martial arts kata to keep myself supple, i'm 47 and 5'11 and I can still kick the top of a door frame and put the palms of my hands on the floor with my legs straight, stretching is really important as you get older because you really want to keep a full range of movement and exercise your whole body without pounding the **** out of it.

My knees and bones are fine, we do a lot of stairs out here combined with 12 hour shifts means I'm healthy enough, just not fit.

In that case, run up the stairs and go down them carefully.
I'm sure you have gleaned enough information from the various opinions and health warnings on here to make up your own mind on how to proceed.
Good luck in your endeavours mate.
To my mind, the quickest and easiest route to improving fitness is to lose weight.

If it's any help Couch 2 5k is actually on the main NHS website so if it was unsuitable for most, generally healthy people, I'm sure they wouldn't be recommending it. If I can do it then (virtually) anyone can.

You know how if you look at an exercise DVD or whatever it will have a warning 'Consult your GP before commencing'?
I asked a GP about this and what they said was that if you have no other health concerns and can get up a flight of stairs without any problems, then it's absolutely fine.

Eastern standard time - gmt -5

Ours is a 25m pool, I managed my first 400m in about 8m30s yesterday. It was going well, just 2 of us in the pool and I was 60 down out of the 100 and then some moron decides he wants to swim in the lane I'm in rather than any of the other empty lanes. And so, let's call him moronic ******, hops in and proceeds to try to swim over me.

Told him he was a rude see you next Tuesday and that he needed to go and **** himself. I changed lane, finished my set and then left. I considered taking his energy drink into the toilet and topping it up for him but decided to leave it be.

Do a cardio check first mate

It will take time so don`t over do it

This is the way that works for me as said above. run to a hart rate not a time/ distance this way you will burn more fat,yes if you run at a higher hart rate you will burn more calories but not all of them calories will be fat maybe only 50%. You want to run at about 60% of your max hart rate for your age.
