But this is also dependant on how far you want to go.

A nice clean low miles WRX is better and a lot cheaper than a knackered STI.

But it is a waiting game and the odd decent cheap STI does come up, there was one for £5k a week or so ago, and they definitely come up inside your budget, just buy the best example of either you can find.
well im keeping my eyes peel'd everywhere at the mo, here, ebay, pistonheads, autotrader, gumtree and even swapz, but not really keen on using the last 2, but I guess its worth looking everywhere poss. Hopefully one will come up soon

You just don't give up do you!

Give me a 350bhp Newage WRX and I bet I can break it in less than a mornings track work!

Oh, and for the record....my 2002 6speed box was still going fine the day I sent it abroad to the new owner, 100000 miles with the last 5000 over 400bhp.

Save a bit more and get the sti. I was in your position, drive both and realised the sti is worth the premium. Silky smooth box, good brakes and a little bit more focused.

Before I put my Sti8 lump in,I was running 351bhp on standard wrx engine/box/clutch etc,I drove it hard yes,but still had respect for it and all was fine for 8months.of course if you hammer any car round a track for half a day with no respect for it,it will take its toll on it!!

car wouldn't be getting pushed much anyway, it will be a daily car and one of the reasons I aint really after performance so much is the fact I rarely ever put my foot down in my evo when I had that, other than the odd blip out of roundabouts etc

tidgy the thing is with your wrx it has been rebuilt and forged due to the crap 2.5 dying and now has 400 bhp and standard wrx suspension and wrx brakes.

its a nice car but just fast in a straight line, in my opinion the brakes and suspension arent really up to the job.

my car has mostly standard sti, engine gearbox and running gear.

it has coilovers due to wanting the car lower and a big brake conversion.
your wrx (allegedly) has a brake conversion also

its not just the gearbox and brakes that are better on the sti, the engine is far stronger and has avcs heads too, its good for 450 bhp in standard form about 100bhp more than the wrx.

350 bhp is the limit for a wrx so you are running it at the most power it can take and its a ticking time bomb on how long it lasts at that power and the fact it wont bloody stop.

350 bhp is easily achievable in an sti and nowhere near its maximum for engine gearbox and brakes.

i know a few sti's that have as well, but i also know some that have been pushed seiously hard by pro drives yet havn't broken. A decent driver is also a mechanicly sympathetic driver.

so whats the point of having 400 bhp if you cant use it because of the running gear???

this is the reason the sti is better as the running gear is up to the job

gearbox etc is fine, just need to do brake and suspension, besides its not like sti comes full setup either, still have to do rarb, anti lift etc etc

it needs tweaking but the major components are there and safe to use at that power, which i cant say is correct for the wrx standard set up.

i agree to a point but the sti parts can be sold on and the major downside to the wrx is it 5 speed box.

I really haven't got £7k to spend on a car though. im still partially leaning towards a wrx though as the money I do have to spend ill be able to get the car to how I want.
Will probably look for other cars though if nothing comes up probably this time next month
