It's certainly the PS4's fault for not having enough horsepower to do something as contemporary as being able to run 1080p @ 60fps.
The new consoles are only 'next gen' compared to the previous gen. They're already behind what is possible on even mid-range PCs, and in the next 7 years of the life of the consoles that gap will increase even further.

I suspect that this is more a case of it being developed on Xbox one and ported to PS4, as Microsoft do pay Activision large amounts of money for early release etc.
There seems to be little disagreement in the press and gaming world that the PS4 has more grunt, and as both are on X86 architecture, the Xbox One will have lost its 'easier' to program position. We could even see games devleoped on PS4 and ported to Xbox one because no doubt, developers will want to showcase their games in the highest quality possible.
Interesting times.

I'm genuinely put off by the fact The One can't do full 1080p. Yes I'm sure developers will be able to push it once they've got their heads round it but it's the wrong way round. They should at least be able to start off with 1080p resolution and then add graphical flare when they get their minds around programing for it (although it's essentially a PC anyway?).
I think I'm going to cancel my pre-order.
Edit.. cancelled order. I'll just get one later next year.

Talking to the guys in Game today they guaranteed to get me an Xbox before the end of November, apparently Microsoft made sure they made more than enough so that they could capitalise if Sony cocked up again, which they have. Didn't bother with the pre-order though as I want to see what everyones reviews of them are.

It's worth while analysing ALL information available to make an informed view.
I've documented quite heavily on other gaming related forums, on what we currently know, what makes sense and what could be the end game. Above all any conclusions about which console is more powerful or more importantly, which one will provide the better experience, is something that is way too early to state.
To cut a long story short:
Don't judge performance based on what multi-format games will be available on day one.
Don't assume because the PS4 can do game x now at 1080p and XBO can do the same game at "only" 720p, means anything conclusive.
The XBO is using a new "method" of architecture model and how it will work with low level API's. The PS4 is using a tried and tested model. This certainly explains the differences in the same multi-format game "resolutiongate" currently doing the rounds. Time will tell whether MS's approach will change a future "mass" approach, or whether this will be a revisit of Sony's previous architecture model mistakes.
If you look at Turn 10's Forza 5, that is a prime "naughty dog" scenario imo. Taking advantage on what can be utilised, with the appropriate skills and time.
Don't expect too much from Day 1 releases.
Don't get sucked in by the hype.
Buy the system that provides you with the games and functionality that YOU want to play and use.
I could go on for ever, explaining what's what in more detail, but these are the key elements imo.
This is an exciting time..... I can't wait for my PS4 and XBO to drop.

from the start the xbox has caused me concerns from the rumours of turning down clock speeds to the oversold (by ms) "cloud" processing. running the latest cod at 720p is a joke considering the spec increase and cod doesnt look graphically impressive either. the best thing going for xbox is the release games which are alot better now than ps4.
ive gone for the ps4, big gamble for me always had xbox`s

The COD engine is fairly old (with some tweaks) the BF4 engine is far more complex and resource heavy. BF4 is 720p and COD is 720p (on the XBO). That may highlight where a plausible problem lies..... and it may not be the hardware. A bad workman always blames his tools (although I suspect there are other influences that have meant a development problem).

Did a pre-order of the PS4 + Killzone bundle via Zavvi as they were showing as delivering on release day. Believe it when I see it but one of the pre-order tracking sites did actually list Zavvi as well.

I would suggest it's not a programmers fault for the COD situation, probable more like time / cost constraints, together with experience of platform and libraries lacking. Add to this the issues with multi-platform dev. and you soon realise it's not an easy thing for release day 1 timeframes.

Anyone recommend a semi decent 24" monitor to connect the PS4 up to? Want to replace my ageing 22" Samsung and HDMI to DVI converter. I assume. 1920x1080 res to match PS4 native output and a low response time are a must?

Response time is one thing.... processing lag is another, if you're lag sensitive to this kind of thing (which for FPS type games, can be quite crucial).
To get the lowdown on the "gaming" aspect and what works well or best, good to head over to http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ for some good info.

Forza 5 looks good. That's the game I'm looking forward to. I do like the way that you can drive the Lotus E21 F1 car, set times round the Top Gear test track and I'm fairly surprised they've managed to get the Top Gear boys to do in game commentary. James May in a video game, who'd have thought it

the hardware must be part of the problem though shaun. xbox has that dlc contract with activision and i reckon getting the xbox to work at 1080p is all they have been working on lately. i am surprised that ms has allowed the ps4 port to be 1080p capable
with all that wonga the cod franchise has made i would have thought their graphics engine would have been the best out there, theyve got lazy.

I agree. I think MS just assumed their existing 360 customers would stay with them. Given the 360 is often seen as the "gamers" choice and the PS3 was more for arcade style / younger people. They dropped the ball on this one and Sonys ploy of out gunning them on rendering resolution is working, because I am sold on the PS4 now. I think the extra grunt is going to be worth a lot more in 3 or 4 years time.
The other thing that worries me, now I have looked at the specs a bit more is, how long will this new gen consoles last?
IIRC they said 8 to 10 years. BUT, given they are all now running "PC" style internal HW in theory if they kept with this for "next next gen" then they could bring out a more powerful version quite quickly - and the older games would still run just fine - and the newer games could run a lot better??
So could MS be cashing in on the launch and the first 18-24 months of sales - use the cheaper HW and get Kinect out there - then offer an "Xbox 1.1" later...
Sony already went all out (ish) on specs, and I think their system is what I expected from next gen. MS XBone is not.

If you subscribe to the idea of being able to upgrade your hardware to get higher graphical detail, and (presumably) have backwards compatibility with it, then you basically are into the PC lifecycle and might as well make the jump fully to PC gaming - especially with the 'Steambox' era on the horizon.
However neither MS nor Sony will go for the specification refresh you mention; I believe they've already stated this new generation will have a similar lifespan to the previous one, so any hardware changes will be around making things smaller/quieter/cheaper, not around increasing performance.

There is allsorts of underground discussion about access to specific API's that take advantage of the XBO architecture, that due to NDA's in place with AMD, have yet to be "switched on" and made available to developers. All part of the technology masterplan apparently and the tie in with AMD that Sony are not party to. Who knows.
The fact of the matter is that the demographic these consoles are aimed at (12-17yr olds), really don't care about 720p vs 1080p. That's why some of this is irrelevant (or that's MS's take I suspect and to a large extent, the developers).
Time will tell.

Don't get sucked in by the hype........ not until that translates to a consistent achievement.
MS have already suggested this next gen is here for up to 10yrs.... I would be surprised if Sony think any different. If you look at the current gen, this has a few more years left in it yet and we're already at year 8 for the 360.

Neither of them are 'next' gen - they are at best current gen compared to PC gaming as it is.

Time for some context setting in this resolutiongate hype.
Look at this video comparing the PS4 vs XBO version of COD.
http://uk.ign.com/videos/2013/11/12/...one-commentary
Take in to account that the PS4 version (@1080p) actually has twice as much pixel count as 720p (XBO version).
Does that video look like the PS4 is x2 better resolution!? I can't see it.... regardless of what the "commentator" is saying, the video certainly does not give that impression imo (in places it appears to be a nats **** sharper).
Perhaps it's the video compression..... but they have both been compressed.
Can't wait for lensoftruth.com to do a comparison.

Just been notified by GAME, they have taken the full payment for the XBO. Only a few days to go now. One down, only the PS4 to go.
