Tubbs she left power when things was fine and dandy. Labour got in after John Major and then it all went easy for the benefit system.

 

"Thatcher the milk snatcher" because she stopped children from getting a free bottle of milk each day at school..

Unemployment rose, manufacturing dropped (by something like 30%).

Closing of the mines decimated whole towns that have never recovered.

 

this is true, but it doesnt change the fact she created it to cover up the thousands she put out of work in the first place.

 

I left school two years after she came to power, went straight into a job and I've never had a day unemployed since.

There are facets of her leadership I don't like (I feel terribly sorry for the poor miners for example) but on balance, I think she was a true patriot who was prepared to back Britain to the exclusion of all else, and I'm very sad she has died.

 

Perversely she was the last Primeminister this country had with any *****, whatever you thought of her politics. RIP

I was sorry to hear that she had died.

I had great admiration for her,she was such a strong leader unlike our present wishy washy political examples who are frightened to make a decision in case they offend other world leaders. She stood up for our country and did what she felt was right regardless of what others thought. She dragged this country up by its boot laces and saved it from collapse. Hers was the one voice which stood up against the Eu, all the others are frightened to say anything in support of their own countries. No one dared to go against the word "No" when she said it. Oh how we need such a leader now!

Ali B is so right when he says that she was the greatest leader we have had since Winston Churchill. He was another one who would do anything to support our country. Will we ever see another leader up to their standards?

We suffered a great loss when she left power and also now that she has died. I am very glad that she will have a state funeral which is befitting for someone who did so much for this country.

The fact that she has an economic and political doctrine in her name and that term is used even today speaks volumes about the impact she had on British politics. RIP.

 

Historically, the most important thing she did was break the post war national aspiration of full employment and thus used unemployment as a part of industrial/economic/social policy

Poll tax was fair in principle, why should some old biddy for example pay the same or much more than someone
like Mick philpott for example just because they had work hard all of their life and had a bigger house than someone who had contributed f all.

It's a shame there is no leader in politics who can take this country to where she had it. The best leader of my life time by a mile. Look at the ultra lefties rearing their heads on here, they obviously like/enjoy the jeremy kyle society we have now thanks to Labour's benefit culture.

These were inevitablities, Thatcher just hastened them. A lot of the mines we already uneconomical, and ultimately, they will run out of coal.

As for manufacturing, the Tiger economies were always going to overtake the 'old world' economies. It just happened during her tenure.

We could have a manufacturing industry in the UK, but eveything would be a lot more expensive, and then people would moan about prices!

The YTS was a terrible policy. Saying we have enough skilled people, we don't need any more. Awful consequenses that we are still paying for (and trying to rectify) today.

Only after the Tory party had booted her bony **** out. Shw was unelectable before after the Polls tax.

It was pretty simple why people disagreed. It make no distinction on ability to pay. Quite often households with large families in one house in poorer areas were paying far, far more than 2 people living in a mansion.

It was "fair" only in as much that households that used public services more, paid more (street lights, rubbish collection, police involvement etc was high in poorer areas) But then, that's like saying the poorest should pay more income tax because they use mor epublic services. it doesn't stack up.

When it comes to taxation then it has to have a basis in ability to pay, otherwise you get into trouble. Just like Thatcher did.

Taxation in its purest from is very different though.

Why should the amount you pay be based on the size of your house? Why should a single pensioner pay more than a family of 5? The old rates system was flawed and Thatcher's basic concept was good.

The "poll tax" was means tested, by the way. But don't let the facts get in the way of your good old fasioned socialist rant
