I know this isnt a STI Vs WRX thread, but this has turned out this way! However my experience is this, Ive had one blown WRX engine to which I had it rebuilt, and one 5 Speed Box, had it replaced in my Subaru Motoring history, so for that alone I would not take a newage WRX over 350/350 on standard internals or box. HOWEVER I have read reports on here of a reputable Co running a motor to 400bhp on a Standard 5 Speed box.

Ive also had 2 STI's running 400bhp with no issues, a simple change of some parts (Turbo, Injectors, or FPR, Inlet, Exhaust, 3 Port, and a few other parts and tweaks) to get there reliable, or at least for the engines I had at the time.

If I was go to 400-450bhp again, and definately beyond this I would be looking at going at least forged.

So my opinion is that you should be looking at finding a non runner STI, and then get Alan to build you a 2.1 for it

Had a Engine quote for a 2.1 from a company starting out called Knights Developments

500bhp rated
Heat treated crank, Manley rods, Mahle 4032 pistons.
Including --Arp bolts, Cosworth head gaskets,
New genuine water pump and modified oil pump and Cambelt. £3400 built and fitted.

Or

Heat treated crank, Manley rods, wisco pistons. Work well together lower compression that the 4032 pistons allowing more boost ( less torque low down )
£3600 built and fitted.

Any views on this spec, I still learning about this so be good to get some feedback

 

If they are just starting out, I'd be inclined to be more worried about the after sales IMHO, if something goes wrong are they prepared to stick their hand in their pockets to rectify it.

Its all good getting good cheap quotes and service, and everybody has to start somewhere but tread carefully would be my advice, no disrespect meant to that company at all, they could be one of the good guys, but you catch my drift

Don't be silly. There are many other factors that influence an engine's reliablity than whether it's components are cast or forged.

It's just that a forged component is likely to be stronger than an eqivalent cast component so less prone to failure.

 

Yep, that's about it!
The object is to provide a measure of strength relative to use.
The engine components have a limited stress life from stock, although as long as you operate inside the tolerance they should be fine.
It's all about where you are and where you want to go.
Personally, if I decided to go marathon running, I'd prepare for it, rather than end up in a jellied heap a quarter of the way round.

Valid point, as long as it's in good condition. Bear in mind they use forged pistons, which is the point at issue.
They are only improved by going to 2.1 though.

Yep incined to agree with peeps on here about using alan i'am up in glasgow but will be dropping my car of at engine tuners for my 2.1 build and i myself are going the expensive route ie. wrx bugeye but thats my choice something a little different.
