I think storage could be an issue for a lot of people.

My garage would soon fill up with 4x20" wheels and 4x whatever's on the wife's IQ.

As someone above said, these tyres are good between October and March - so, you would get value for money.

The biggest cost would be a new set of alloys/steel wheels ... but, these can be sourced quite cheaply at the moment.

But, watch the price of wheels in the scrapyards suddenly get very expensive all of a sudden!!

for the small amount of aggro it isn't worth the extra cost,
1 set of 214/40/17 hancook £289 plus £40 backhander fitting per year
vs same as above plus 4x nokian £106 quid each works out as £695 every 2 years so £347.50 per year plus £80 fitting , not worth the extra unless you have a spare set of wheels

The best one was a vw transporter van who decided after joining the M60 from the M62 that going out across to the (completely snow covered) outside lane and ending up just missing the barrier and sliding sideways in front of me that I had to avoid such an idiot, so you may say people with winter tyres drive recklessly, 99% dont, but you do get much more grip and the ability to acutally stop in a straight line in about a 1/4 of the distance a car with summer tyres on does! (where 99% seem to drive like total numpties until they touch their brakes and crash/**** themselves )

I think you should try some winter tyres for yourself (decent ones), its night and day as demonstrated in those vids I put up.

It's like expecting Manc Airport to lash out millions of pounds on snow ploughs and de-icing equipment on the off chance that it might snow two days a year.

Some gimp on the news the other day was gushing how the Norwegians deal with snow in comparison to the UK!!!

BUT IT SNOWS IN NORWAY ALL WINTER, EVERY WINTER

And what about the reporter on Breakfast news this morning stood outside with a mike, snow piling up on his head grabing snow off parked cars and telling us that it's snowing.

YOU STUPID GIMP, I CAN SEE IT'S SNOWING JUST BY LOOKING OUT OF THE WINDOW.

No it's like expecting someone to buy a warm waterproof coat as it might be less than 7 degrees C and wet for 5 months of the year

Sorry, must of missed that bit of the thread - which of the winter tyre advocates was talking about driving recklessly irrespective of the conditions?

The point is that they give you more grip - it's up to the driver as to what to do with that grip. One thing I do know is that if you have no grip at all you are not in control of the car, no matter how good you think you are. I wouldn't leave the house in the Subaru in snow with all-weather tyres on - the combination of fat tyres, inflexible rubber and summer tread patterns chocked with snow is just too dangerous.

When you are cold, it's quite easy to keep warm, but when you are wet and cold, now thats a different story.

My winter tyres last around 8-9 years being used 3 months a year not 2 years so your calculation is a bit out

You really need to get your money's worth in 5 years as by that time the tyre has degraded due to age and performance drops off.

Nik.

Just because your summer tyres are a ******* obscene size, doesn't mean your winter tyres need to be the same size. Get a smaller set of steel wheels and a smaller set of tyres unless you are to vain a poser to stick **** wheels on your car for a few months.

Well I for one will be purchasing winter tyres for my rims for next year without fail.

Summer tyres do not cut the mustard (well mine anyway RE070's) you can say what you like with regards to driving style, if my car had a even a cheap set of winter tyres I'm fairly confident they would out perform what's on the car now, I can still get about but come to the slightest gradient and its game over its as simple as that, I can physically get out of the car an watch it sit on the spot with all 4 wheels turning with the diff locked as well, they may be great for summer and the warmer days but they are shít in the snow and that is a fact! So I for one WILL be investing in a set, it may only be a couple of days a year we see snow but given temps are still freezing this time of year my eyes have been seriously opened thinkin the impreza was invincible given the correct tyres it probably would be tho to a degree

Good post and very true, now await the usual suspects telling you you need driver training After all driver training helps you bend the laws of physics yes?

Winter tyres for sure are better than summer, but RE070's can't even cope with a greasy or damp road never mind snow.

Driver training or not I'm fairly confident the only thing that will end up bending is their cars around lamposts

I live in the valleys of Wales where hills are near enough everywhere and for anybody in doubt about my statement of the car sitting there spinning i will quite happily show them, the outcome is inevitable who ever is behind the wheel that much I do know, and it can't be driving as when the corsa derv van comes out to play with budget winter tyres on there ( its a response vehicle for local breakdowns ) it will go places my scoob won't, as strange and as mad as it may sound its very true, I got stuck Saturday coming out of work yet one of my staff with a derv yaris píssed up the hill straight passed me, and without doubt its because of the tyres I'm running, they just cant get traction, I would put money on the car breezing up that hill with a better set of tyres

Me too. Trouble is a number of people on here seem to think they can make the difference over the tyres.... as you said... coming to a lamp post near them... soon

This is my first year with winter tyres on my 330d (Falken HS449).

I have to say they are fcsking epic.

I live in High Wycombe and it's pretty hilly. I've had no issues on untreated / snowy / icy roads.

Well worth the inverstment:

£80 - set of 17" OEM 5 spoke wheels from a breakers (less £30 for the old tyres which have been sold!)

£83 per corner for the tyres

£10 per wheel fitting & balancing

I have to laugh at the amount of BMW & Merc's abandoned on the roads where I live.

And add Jag drivers to that banned list too
