Power kiting is good fun.

Especially if you progress to boarding and or buggying.

R/C cars can be a good time passer too.

 

Mountain biking for me. Made a few new friends as the ride invariably ends in a pub

I've taken to biking to work and back (30 miles all in) on a road bike. Improved fitness no end.

 

A few fellow cyclists on here! I prefer mountain biking but the road bike gets the odd blast once in a while.

I guiltily got friendlier SPD pedals for Christmas that work better with normal shoes (XT trails); basically so my weekly pub meet is easier with normal shoes!

 

I can list many things that I do in my time, but most are business orientated.
My main passtime is researching anything to do with transport, particularly aircraft.
I did start making a model railway layout but had to abandon that when I moved home.



I also moderate on an e-commerce business forum, that's a bit serious so I come on here for entertainment

Last year before my life was turned upside down, before domestic issues, I started making jewellery.




I bought components and made the jewellery from them.
They are genuine Swarovski Chrystal elements with magnetic hematite beads.

Next year I will continue making jewellery to sell instead of giving away.

I also like single malt whisky and Guinness.

 

What should I be looking at to get a semi decent road bike? Quite like the thought of cycling into work in the morning.

 

Go to a local bike shop and have a chat with them.

Avoid Halfords.

You won't get much for less than £700.

 

This my hobby - it's also part of my livelihood (I'm very lucky to have a career that combines the two)



When I thought I was getting "stagnant", I did a few things actually.

1. Joined a band (www.funkatroniclovecommandos.co.uk) - funk/disco covers band. Great laugh, and it gets me out of the house!

2. Joined up with our work-based football squad. Nothing serious - you turn up and play constantly on an astro-turf hockey pitch with an average of 14 players for 90 minutes. No breaks.
Been finding my preferred position and learning the game, as I know NOTHING about how to play footy. Got a LOT fitter, my physical strength has returned (I used to weight-train, so have the "bulk", but had lost a lot of strength). Love it.

3. Enrolled on a Strategic Management course - equivalent to a Masters Degree as I wanted to stretch my braincells. May not come in use just yet, but you never know.

4. Also got a Specialized hard-tail mountain bike that I'm starting to use once the feckin rain subsides (I live in a part of the country that has been under water for the last few months! Don't really want to retrofit the bike with floatation devices! )

Unless you plan to cycle a lot, it would be worth looking at a road biased hybrid. Road bikes are quite uncompromising! I've got a basic Specialized Allez Elite which was £800. Served me well in a couple of triathlons.

 

Winter rules plus slow greens make it so much easier.

One thing i noticed,since i've hit 34 i found it hard over the last few months to get motivated,even going to the gym or working out at home i've had to push myself some days.Not sure if its just a phase i'm going through,or i'm just starting to slow down and become a lazy ***...

I'd have a think about if you like being on your own or want a sociable hobby, that might narrow the choice down.

I do a lot of walking but would never want to join a walking/ rambling club, I love being able to go at my own speed and enjoying the peace and quiet (well, have OH with me so not entirely alone). I know some people think it's a bit nerdy but I have vertigo so climbing 3000ft and going over a narrow ridge is quite exciting for me!
Benefits are that it is a relatively cheap hobby once you have decent gear, can do it all year round, you get lots of fresh air and exercise, and it is meant to be good for depression.

The sense of achievement is great, especially if you have a target. I'm very slowly working through the Wainwright walks, probably take another decade to finish but that's part of the fun (as is coming home knackered and covered in mud/ sheep crap).

Also links in with photography as we always take a camera and have a blog set up to record what we've done.

Some very good ideas here folks, some much more appealing than others. I have always loved models and railway stuff but I just think I'm too *old* for all that now which is why I'm a bit stumped at the mo.

I plan on starting back to the gym as I really enjoyed it and it improved my drive and overall state of mind but unfortunately I wrecked my ankle last week due to excessive alcohol.

 

I'm gonna let you into a little secret. I've had one for years, it was just funnier saying I didn't and getting a rise out of one or two serious plebs on this forum.....but now my mood has slightly soured and can't be bothered keeping up the whole charade.

 

Never to old for models or model railways, join a model railway club and you will get a hobby and a social life with people of all ages.

 

The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland is based beside me, I keep meaning to call down on a Sunday and see about helping out.

When I last had a train set, my main objective was to throw a massive bucket of lego across a section of the track then see how fast the Flying Scotsman needed to go to blast through it, I doubt a model railway club would appreciate this.

 

Power kiting, static and land boards, astronomy, photography, fixing up classic minis etc.

Spot on, fantastic scale to model in, a bit expensive but worth it.
It's all packed away in boxes now.

 

Main hobbies are Motorsport ( Rallying ) and Golf

Also have always enjoyed model making for many years and currently fly R/C Helicopters and Fixed Wing. Have an American Outline model railway layout.

 

For myself:

Road and Mountain Cycling, 150+ miles per week.
Carp Fishing and collecting rare related books
Running 50+ miles per week.
Cleaning the car.
Bunking off work early.

 

Yes indeed, I have some Fleischmann stock which I occasionally run on a friends layout.

I used to Clay Pigeon shoot and target shoot with Rifles, but haven't been for ages.

My only real hobby now (If you can call it that) is the R8. It's an expensive hobby, but one that I can justify.
