Again it depends on whether you can afford or want to pay the running costs.
Okay OP, buy a Legacy Twin Turbo rev D.
2.1 Forged stroker, 6 speed and a nice single turbo conversion.
There you go, some change left over and you are still in a Subaru, lots of space and more importantly you can play with the big boys.
I am in no way biased

Thanks for all the suggestions. I forgot about Mercs in my original list and there are some seriously quick ones that can be had for not too much dosh but as has been mentioned already a car that cost a lot new is still going to cost a lot to run
I need to revisit and also look at their oil burners.
Seriously like the look of that Legacy but the newer JDM imports seem hard to come by but then Autotrader etc. isn't exactly overloaded with any of these types of cars. Evo estate, I'd heard about that, looks cool but I'm not sure it's for me.
And then back to the RS4, I could afford to buy one, and I've read that aside from the brakes they don't cost much more to run than an S4 assuming everything else continues to work fine but that's the stumbling block.... seems like the DRC suspension is a bit of an achilles heel and the vacuum system controlling the intake valves, exhaust valves etc. can cause problems, and finally the engine coking up due to overlap in the valve timing though it seems like a good Italian tune once in a while can keep this at bay
Still not sure

On the Mercs - are you sure you can't haggle a bit?

I suspect that thing doesn't actually drive anywhere, it just rolls the tarmac up behind it and drags your destination to you.
5t.

Lots of good suggestions, except the RS4 one ..... crock of over rated understeery *****!
Tommys right about gtb brakes though, the audi will definately pull up sooner!
And the mercs, they cost alot to keep running!
M5 tourer is a bloody good car, but finding a goodun can be a game!
Good to know your budget though, if a forester sti's in range then i really rate them! So does vicky! :-)

I had a Litcho Foggy STi with 330/350 as well. It was pretty special.

Another mistake to sell it!

My friend has the most recent RS4 Avant + lovely engine and interior - there is very little space in the back if you have a 6 footer in the front seats, plus it eats tyres (which are v expensive) and brakes don't cope well if you're on a charge due to the weight - but it's a grand tourer not a sports car in my mind.
E55 Amg estate,as mentioned earlier. Now getting cheaper(to Buy).IF you want serious shove this is the car to have,Remap, headers and pulley will see close to 600 bhp at that E60 M5s are left behind never mind Rs4s.Thinking of one myself infact.
