If your rebuilding your engine you might as well stick with what you have as you will be forging it anyway,and buying a STI is just another added expense you don't need.If you could pick up a 2.0 litre CDB and build that,that would make more sense and a better option.SJ.
which cars have the cdb?
Models that came with closed deck block + engine code are:
WRX A/B; EJ20GDW1HD (no A/C), EJ20GDW1HE (with A/C)
STI Ver. I; EJ20GDW1HD (no A/C), EJ20GDW1HE (with A/C)
WRX A Type RA; EJ20GDW1HJ (no A/C), EJ20GDW1HR (with A/C)
WRX B Type RA; EJ20GDW2HJ
WRX C Type RA; EJ20GDW4HJ
WRX STi Ver. II Type RA ; EJ20GDW5PE
That's as far as I know Subaru Impreza 2.0 CDB models and there much cheaper to pick up then the EJ22T block.SJ.

Jura ran an open deck to 490bhp but you wouldn't want to go much further.
There is a lot of expense when going for more power, esp on a wrx, things to consider are the gearbox and brakes, if you don't have upgraded items on these already than cutting your losses and getting an sti may be the way to go as you'll get brembos etc, also get avcs.
Just speaking from experience ... lol

everything else has been done.Ap front calipers Brembo rears Perrin arbs grooved discs Bilstein coilovers superpro rc kit whiteline droplinks 2.1 build & gearbox is on my 2014 to do list. All i need is some money
You have some superb supporting mods,I would try to source a 2.0 CDB and stroke it up to a 2.1 rotated or standard position GT30 billet turbo job done.SJ.

Just pace yourself dave everything does not have to be brought straight away,don't forget when your 2.1 is built you still have to run it in and the VF48 can be used comfortably for that,a successful build can be achieved with good planing work out how much power you are looking to achieve from your 2.1 and pick your modifications for that and have a little extra kitty for all the miscellaneous parts.SJ.

I am on the lookout now for a CDB which will be the base for my 2.1 build.
Perhaps i should start by pricing it all up.Or i could see which engine builders do a drive in drive out deal. I expect that is probably the most expensive option

This^^ all this hoo ha about cdb's not really necessary unless your looking at going over 500bhp and plan on some VERY serious track action, it adds about £7/800 to the cost of the build which is roughly 50% of the cost of the parts for a 2.1, i'll be doing a 2.0 in an odb this year with a view to 320 ish in my daily and then a 2.1 next year in a odb for my Type r looking at circa 400 bhp.
Or go for a semi closed deck block Dave like I've said to you, there are lots of 2.1 builds using them, no machining costs and unless you're going for stupid BHP they're fine.

This could be sooner rather than later,started my car and as it was ticking over i could smell oil vapor coming through the air vents.I dipped the oil later it was near the low mark!
Newage SCDB, no rear thrust conversion necessary, better cooling around the cylinders and far cheaper to source a good quality crankcase.
Unless you are going for silly BHP then I would look for a newage STi engine with AVCS heads, you should be able to pick up a suitable donor engine very cheaply.
