I'm not saying it's bad to be happy at being one of the top 3 in the world at something (i will certainly never have that) but i find it difficult to comprehend celebrating winning a bronze / Silver when in reality you have lost gold.
It is difficult to believe that you have to make a fuss about such a thing. Why on earth should there not be awards to celebrate 2nd and third places? No reason why one can't mark the achievement of being that close to winning.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but don't the First, Second and Third placed drivers at every race in the championship get awarded trophies

Got to be honest - i knew nothing about his Dad before this thread. I've tried my hardest to avoid the Olympics but being Married to a sports fan has made this impossible

+2 he's done brilliantly. Perhaps you'd rather he was on a street corner begging tabs off people and trying to purloin some cider before pissing through your granny's letterbox?

Personally, I reckon you need to look at yourself if you don't know that you've done your best. If you are at the Olympics and you don't win, you better have run/jumped/swum a personal best or you messed up your training big style.

It's a profession as he will get taxed on his earnings. Hobbies attract no tax. It was the argument Phil Taylor put forward for why darts is a bona fida sport and not just a pub game.

I don't need to be qualified to state my opinion. What i said stands and you don't agree with it - fine.
I've had silver medals in the past for things (although not in the same league as the Olympics - or even close for that matter) and they have meant nothing to me as somebody else has won - that's my outlook.

i think you are missing the fact that the Olympics is the worlds best sportsmen (and women) If you come 3rd out off all those people you should be pleased. I mean you start at the bottom and work your way up so of course you should be pleased at a bronze at the Olympics as its a higher standard of competition. If it was the European championships and someone won a gold , they would be happier to win a bronze at the World championship as its a harder competition.

if you really have to ask that question its a pointless thread

its pretty obvious to everyone else

The Mens Gymnastics are a good example of they didn't get many medals, hell they weren't even in the individuals finals for most events, yet I think they all had better scores than previously, so they have all improved and all have something to be proud of

The women who faired much worse, still did better than they had done previously so again something to be proud of

Jordan Weiber looked disheartened after getting knocked out by her team mate, but you could clearly see her team mate wanted the win and it showed, and she was infinitely better than Jordan

Really - so why not celebrate being 4th best in the world then with a copper medal??? Surely being 4th best in the whole wide world should qualify for that?

no-one said they were happy to get a bronze medal per-say , the fact he was 3rd was the reason he celebrated , i am sure he would still have been happy to be 4th , or if you only got a medal for comming 1st. Its just getting silly with degrading metals the further way down the leaderboard you go. Its not that hard to understand , if you were karting , and you came 3rd would you not still be happy ? This was the Olympics !

Karting - no, only interested in the win

I'm never gonna be third best at something in the world or maybe even 3 millionth best at something in the world. I was just surprised at the excitement displayed at not winning something and being third without it seems any disappointment at not being the winner - that was all

People were delighted about coming last in a heat but setting a personal best. Perfectly understandable for me.

Imagine being the 3rd best-paid in your chosen profession for example. What a loser you'd be!

If you look at F1 this season up to now if you were third in the 11 races up to now you would be leading the table by one point so all thing being equal you could win the drivers championship by never winning a race and comming in third in every race. What a bummer no joy for the winner NOT!!

To quote Bender from Futurama - "Second place? That's a fancy word for losing!"

I suppose it depends on your expectations. Tom Daley won gold at the World and European championships, so I would have expected him to be disappointed to not get gold.

However, if I were ranked 54th in the world and got bronze, then I would probably show my **** to the crowd in celebration!

It's all relative.

What Geezer said ^^ ... it's all relative to your expectations. Those disappointed with silver must've expected gold (based on rank, past performance etc.) and those delighted with silver probably never expected to get a top two finish (for the same reasons).

Ah yes, the old budgie smugglers! Must be difficult to keep anything on entering the water from 10m!

I think the women should do the 10m board in bikinis

Tom had a really tough qualification and had to repeat that first dive. To be honest, he was understandably pleased to be on the podium.

Remember the synchro one? They went from first to fourth in one dive so at least he got something from the event.

Also, there were people finishing outside the medals that actually broke national records. I'd be pretty pleased with that I'd think.

He has a girlfriend, Kassidy Cook from the USA swimming team. OK, could be a cover, but why? Being gay isn't a hurdle like it used to be. I sit next to a gut at work who on his won admission sounds gay, but he's rampantly heterosexual!
