Ladies, form an orderly queue.

Pug 205 GT in silver with racing stripes. All 1.4 litre of French power, but boy did it shift ! Tape deck on full blast, sunroof, blasting around Nottingham. Loved it though as it was French it did have a few quirks. Namely it seemed to want to go into ditches and hedges alot. Obviously nothing to do with the skills of the driver

You used to look almost respectable then!

I still cant get over the amount of hatchbacks , as first cars ????
. . . . subaru drivers today , dont tend to like them. . . . they/we would tend to choose the three box set up bonnet/cabin/boot. . . . . maybe the 70/80's was loaded with hatches ? ? ? ?
and you paid 8k for an xr2 in 1989? f reg????/ thats brill , i paid £7k for a 1.1 fourdoor new fiesta in 1989 f-reg and was offered a brandnew gls dohc sierra for 10K on the day that i collected the fiesta keys. but the extra 3k was the world in them days.
we had no trouble with the fiesta ,12years and kept it till 99k , did another 980 miles and sold it for a grand as 'low mileage' ! and the new owner kept it another three years before trading it on..wow , we towed a trailer and had a big roofrack and went everywhere, it was a good car. but the scoob now is better still. !

It HAD to be hot hatches back in the 80s to get one's kicks.

Basically, anything reasonably contemporary, and with an engine bigger than 1600cc (regardless of performance!), seemed to attract inflated premiums for young/first (17-24yo) time drivers back then. Remember the 9-group ins. rating system.

Loved the 80s - where slammed Mk.1 & 2 Escort RSs were the hot cars for the youngsters of the day. Complete with big bore red Pecos and cherry bombs.

You'd've loved my first car then... mk2 escort 1.3GL (square headlights ) with small cherry bomb and a tailbomb (cherry bomb with a chrome tip). My old man reckoned he could hear me comking for a good 45 seconds before i got to the house... probably abotu 1/4 mile away i think.

lowered on blocks and clamps ont eh front springs, wolfrace slots and 4 massive cibies on the front.

got written off by a lorry 3 months after a passed my test, so i did the obvious thing and transferred it all over to my second car... another mk2 escort.
