Race Car Build - DIY Style
Had a big tidy up of the garage tonight as painting sure is a messy business. As a result the car saw daylight for the first time.
The last time I did this after a respray attempt ended in utter disappointment as I realised it was stripy and patchy. Thankfully no such issues this time. I got the car in the daylight and I'm delighted how its turned out.
Anyway here's a few pics.

A good day on it today.
I cut the bonnet for the aerocatches and then painted both sides of the bonnet.
Firstly I did the underside of the bonnet.

Went out for a couple of hours which gave the underside enough time to dry.
I flipped the bonnet over and prepped that.
I gave it a mist coat first.

More done tonight.
Wet Flat with 800 grit paper

Washed off and wet flatted with 1200 grit paper

Process repeated with 2000 paper.

Once the paint was flatted washed and dried I then began the polishing process.
First up was 3 passes with some faraclay G3 and a compound pad.
Then 3 passes with some Ultra cutting creme and a polishing pad.
Finally a fresh pad and some Mequiars Ultimate polish.
Final result.

It's an awful lot of work. Complicated by the fact that most comptitions now require the exhaust exit to be in the rear section of the vehicle or behind the front wheels as a bare minium.
It's not just the turbo position thats to be considered. It's all the work that goes with it. The rerouted oil and coolant pipes, oil return to sump catch can location. Oil cooler location. These are all impacted by it. My honest opinion here is if you have the facilities or good contacts to aid the abrication of stuff then go for it. However, if you're stuck for that kind of stuff then stick to the rotated position. It's an awful lot of work for a rough gain of 300-400 rpm in spool.

Painted the rear bumper last night and put it on the car today. I think this is the first picture I've taken that actually shows what the colour is really like.

Then I started to work on the front.

All the imperfections filled ready for a couple of coats of 2k high build primer tomorrow.
