newbie wrx modding advice
thanks for the replies... and I dont feel bad about being off topic either.... after the Pugwash debate
I think I will de-cat the down pipe - and leave it so for the MOT - and look at either a de-cat pipe for the post turbo cat or a sports cat system.
any further suggestions would be appreciated.

I just wonder if you have your terminology correct?
Pre turbo is UP Pipe - post turbo is down pipe.
David
Let me think about that, I read the other explanation then opened my mouth without thinking.....Oh well.
I shall try again, 2 cats, from the Heads to Tailpipe, downpipe - cat1 - turbo - 2nd pipe - cat2 - centre section - tailpipe.
If the above is correct(and you can understand it), my thought was to remove cat1 and leave it like that; then either use a de-cat pipe for cat2 and refit the cat for MOT, or get a sports cat to replace cat2 as a permanant fitting.
Hope you got that... Phew..

Well those are suggesting 3 cats as I 'corrected ' a few posts above. To my knowledge the one described as a "rear cat" is not a cat as such. If it is, we've been throwing away tons of beer money for years

new age only have 2 cats one in the up pipe and after the turbo
hawkeye wrx only has one cat and that is after the turbo
for mot you will only need the cat after the turbo
i have a fully decatted system and mine passed with no cats at all on my hawkeye
before mot if you have it fully decatted i would have the section after the turbo with the cat in it handy just for to replace each time before mot then remove it after for the decatted piece as it helps on achieving more power and gas flow

Sure.
BTW, that previous post of mine wasn't questioning you -- just saying what I see in that diagram.
And yeah, that diagram is old - it's illustrating the Bug (and possibly the Blob) WRX.
But it looks like it's wrong anyway! (Based on what you and Dave have said).

yep on the hawkeye there is no cat in the up pipe and one after the turbo then a resonator
but on blob and bug there is a cat in the up pipe and one after the turbo and a resonator to get full gains a turbo back decat and up pipe is needed or a sports cat and the rest decatted

just to confuse matters it is only the blob(and bug?) wrx that has the cat in the uppipe.
I will have to look at the down pipe in my garage then because it certainly looks like it has 2 cats in it. Why would they put heatshields around a resonator?

- STI TMIC
- HRC fuel pump
- NGK plugs
- EcuTek remap
- HKS panel filter
- VF43 turbo
- full decat
I did the above cost me £990 for estmited 330/350, take off the turbo save £300 and you have a nice 280 but will want more i guarantee it might as well it all in one

well i am glad i asked about the cats ... i think!
So I hesitantly say - i can do away with the pre cat ( mine is a 2001 bug), and i can just have one cat after the turbo. which looks easiest if its the 2nd or rear cat that is fitted to the centre section.
Unless of course you know different..

Fuel pumps are cheapest for quality at 65.00
NGK plugs might be 30.00
Ecutek ought to be a minimum of 500.00 - officially 600 I believe.
HKS filter might be 30.00
Full decat even secondhand ought to be 250.00 rather more if new
That's 875.00 before the turbo at say 300 for a total of £1175.00

That's remarkably cheap.

If you need one of our HRC pumps in 255, 290 or 340 lph let me know, always a deal to be done for scoobynetters.
We also do our big 6002 which is inline and flows 220lph at 5 bar (305lph O.F.)
All HRC pumps have our no quibble warranty.
Cheers Rob@HRC
