Thanks, I think I'm going to contact Subaru UK and raise the issue direct with them in the first instance - my thinking is that if I've been unfortunate enough to have the lower-arm snap on a wishbone that has been treated, there is a potential for others out there to suffer a similar plight.

Finally sorted. In short, I contacted Subaru UK direct who advised (in writing) that I take the car to the nearest official Subaru garage in order to have the lower-arms inspected, photographed and assessed by Subaru Warranty, with a view to the repairs being covered by warranty under the safety-recall (even on a car which is over 12yrs old).

I visited Europa (Sheffield), explained the situation, and presented the response from Subaru, whereupon Steve managed it all from there. He was brilliant and a massive help in arranging recovery of the vehicle and getting both lower-arms replaced under warranty (and a heavily corroded sub-frame - although at cost to me unfortunately).

When I first discussed the possibility of replacing the broken arm with alloy arms, Europa questioned whether alloy arms were official Subaru parts because they hadn't seen any before. On that basis I'm fairly sure they are like for like stock Subaru replacements but I didn't ask tbh. I've looked under the car and they are a nice shiny black but I guess that won't confirm anything (other than that they should last me a good few years now).

Can't believe I missed this. Never got a letter for 02 bug wrx that my daughter now owns. Could this be due to it being a euro import? I think the car came new from Belgium.

I have a 2003 Blobeye STI Type uk but obviously im not the 1st owner so i dont think ill get a letter for this recall...The question is, am i elegible for this recall and have the parts replaced?

Sti's have alloy control arms so they are not susceptible to the corrosion that much.You are OK.

No time limit mate - I had mine go on me November last year.

I photographed the damage and contacted Subaru UK direct with reference to VOSA recall reference R/2011/146 - LOWER CONTROL ARMS MAY FAIL which may corrode leading to possible breakage if left without treatment.

As you can see from my previous posts in this thread, they sorted it for me (and that was after it was inspected 2 years ago when the letters were first issued).

I think this thread is well worth a bump.

Mine snapped and eventually got resolved but only after a 3 week dealer trip and £1500 worth of warranty work. Anyone who hasn't had this issue checked I urge you to book in with a dealer asap.

In the way of another bump:

I took mine (2002 '52 plate WRX UK bug wagon) to Keith Price Garage in Feb 2012 after receiving the safety recall letter.

The near side rusted through and snapped this week.

Thankfully it happened at parking speed. The wheel pushed back against the rear of the wing, creasing it up against the passenger door, so the door won't open.

The offside looks ripe to do the same at any time, and I can see no sign of any 'treatment' they gave it in 2012...

I'll be contacting KP on Monday to see what's what...

They say no.

The garage only get paid once for the safety recall work. So because they tested the suspension links in 2012, and apparently 'treated them on the car' that's it.

Doesn't matter that they rusted through in the following years.

If I'd not bothered to take the car in at the time of the recall, it'd still be covered now. And they'd be fixing the car free of charge.

That's what they said anyway...

Though I don't recommend anybody should wait until their wishbones fail before getting them checked! Because you might be too 'dead in a ditch' to benefit from the free repairs afterwards!

Mine went to Europa originally when I first received the recall letter and they "tested" the wishbones, but fast forward 2 yrs and mine snapped. I wrote directly to Subaru and then went armed with a letter from Subaru and Europa sorted them (even though they were "tested" at the time of the recall).

So it would seem KP are misleading you ... but I went direct to Subaru UK customers services first knowing that Europa would find it hard to back down. See my original posts above (all the details for contacting Subaru UK are in there).

Hope you get them sorted.

had my lower arms done last year and had new lower arms and new ball joints and loads of
new bolts coz they snapped every bolt they tried to undo and a four hour job yurned into a three day job but got a courtesy car to use while they had mine and i put a thousand on there courtesy car for them. thanks subaru coventry

Well my WRX passed the test in 2012 as it was only 6 years old, but now corrosion is appearing and Subaru UK say that the cost of any replacement will not be covered by the recall.

In the way of an update: I couldn't be bothered to argue the toss with Subaru, over what is now an old car.

So I bought alloy wishbones (and a good condition subframe), from Scoobyspares (thanks to Neil for your kind help and advice).

New drop links, ball joints, etc from ICP (and a Lower Front Panel Kit, because mine was mostly dust).

So now it's only the entire rest of the car that's rusty!...

To be strictly fair - The sump isn't rusty, but that's only because of the oil leak...

Unlike my sump, which I had to replace a few years ago! Mine's a Hawk so needs the bits the headlight levellers attach to (yes I've had to replace these before too!) so don't know if any of the alloy parts from older cars would fit

I'm in a very similar position to above where the recall was carried out but sadly it failed on me whilst driving with the family in the car, no damage to the car other than the snapped arm but it was a dodgy situation to be in.

I've only had the car 2 months or so and had no clue about the recall until I looked into purchasing the arms, and contacted Subaru hoping to get it resolved. I was actually hoping that it was never checked......but it was on the 28th of March 2012. Cleaned and treated.

But with it being 4 1/2 years since I still thought I'd try and get it sorted for nowt but they've confirmed that's a big NOPE!! They're saying that it should've been picked up during one of the MOT's since. That's fair enough.

A bit of an update, re the euro import bug, I checked under the car a few months ago and the lower arms are alloy

Imports eh? Frowned upon come resale time, but as it turns out a better equipped car lower arm wise at least
