this is what wikipedia says:

Version IV (09/97 – 08/98) – GC8E Power remained at 280 PS but torque was raised from 253 lbs./ft of torque to 260. Forged pistons were also added. The interior and the cockpit were changed into a newer design along with the new "White color" gauges. (white faced)
Version V (09/98-08/99) – GC8F The power stayed the same as the previous version 280 PS. The engine layout and design was made cleaner and was dubbed as the Boxer Phase 2 engine. The facelift the rest of the Impreza line had was also applied to the STi. The WRX STi weighed 1,270 kg (2,800 lb). There were 1000 WRX Type RA STi Version 5 Limited cars and the WRX Type R STi Version 5 Limited cars had a 4 month waiting period for each order. The interior was also changed slightly from the Version 4 including seats and steering. This model was also produced as a 555 limited edition.
Version VI (09/99-08/00) – GC8G Most of the changes were cosmetic. The wing was sculpted to be more aggressive. VF28 spec turbo with max boost at 1.2 BAR and produced 224 kW (305 PS) and 388 Nm. There were 2000 WRX STi Version 6 Limited, 500 WRX STI Type R coupe Version 6 Limited and 2000 WRX STi RA Version 6 Limited cars produced. Also 500 WRX STi Version 6 Limited Hatchback models.
Checking the VIN number would be best I think mate. The GC8* bit should tell you what it is

Hi all,

CADS are having their monthly meet on Sunday the 17th June 2012 at Vale Royal Abbey Arms.Chester Road Oakmere Northwich Cheshire CW8 2HB

and I was wondering if any of the tunnel runners fancied tagging along? its a 40 min drive. we tend to have a section of the car park to ourselves so plenty of opportunity to chat. should be 15/20 cars there Pub has good food as well so a bonus for those that want.

anyway if any are interested I will be at the usual Tesco Bidston car park at 10.45 on Sunday 17th. let me know if this is of interest.

Ta SteveB

Right so .. Steve, you sir are my new best friend

Dave and Stu have probably contacted you by now about the bits I hope you have for sale

My poor car needs new shocks and a new starter motor .. I also have to get the bloody wheels done soon or Jo is going to break my legs .. should of happened Monday but they said they wouldn't have time and I needed the car the next day ..

For the record Dave is really sound, I must have spent a good hour chatting to him and asking him stupid questions he's didnt seem to mind though ..

I'm in no rush for the wheels back, I need to put new rubber on the one's I've got but gonna wait until I get back from the F1 the one's you have are just stored in case I get fed up of the white wheels If I was gonna break someone's legs there would be loads on the list but no fellow scoobynetters!
