Diving in grand cayman, the red sea and Orlando - well that was snorkelling with manatees. Also a tour in Namibia.

Hope you like it better than I did - it was an all-in place and while it was luxurious, it felt like being in prison to me. A bit like the Caribbean cruise I did this year, but at least there were no mosquitoes on the ship!

I'd love to go diving - have snorkeled on the Great Barrier Reef, the Cayman Islands and Roatan all of which were amazing.

It was them that wanted to go - and they LOVED it. In fact they LOVED it so much we are going back at Easter instead of going to Orlando (flights alone were going to be £4k flying direct!!!)

Everything is a compromise when you have two small children. It's not where I would most like to go in the world but a combination of sea, weather, infrastructure and kids amusements makes it worth a go I think.

Also I haven't gone for AI so that means we'll be out for dinner every evening and will take trips to the Myan ruins etc.

But I know where you are coming from though, I have reservations about Cancun as well.

That's why I think Florida is so good, especially the Gulf Coast around the Tampa area. It has all of the advantages of Cancun and great food too!

What I like about this web site is how it is reflective of society as a whole.

Apparently 25% spend 15k or above on an annual holiday.

2years ago we spent nigh on £15 k on one holiday.
Two adults, two young kids - Tokyo, Hawaii, San Francisco in 3 weeks. (and I can highly recommend it for young kids).

It'll be a long time before we spend that much on one holiday again.

Normally a weekend in Centre Parcs and a couple weeks in the sun will do us fine.
Often a weekend away in north Wales or the Lakes, and we do a music festival (camping) each year, too.

Actually that was my first choice and it would have actually been cheaper. The only thing was that it wasn't warm enough for us. Avge temps for Orlando are about 23/24 in Feb which is nice touring temp but not hot enough for me to enjoy water sports etc. Cancun is avge 28 degrees at that time which is just perfect for us

we are just coming out of the "small kids zone", and new options suddenly open up

I was actually thinking of doing a trip in 4x4 across the Atlas mountains this year

and Dinghy sailing holidays in the Med are always great fun

I could have had my track car with that cash or on the other hand keep my Mrs and kids and house

I always knew it wasn`t going to be a cheap family holiday but my philosophy about it is if you are going to do it once, Do it right as it wont be coming around again anytime soon unless i get given a shed load of cash?? Anyone??

Gaz.

TBH when we spent 6k on our holiday I was earning over 50k a year including benefits so it only a couple of months saving.

Nowdays things are different and i wouldnt dream of spending that sort of money now.

Spent less than 1k last year and that was a week in lanzarote at the end of September and 3 nights in a cottage in Wales in march. I guess I don't have expensive taste where holidays are concerned.
There won't be one this year as we have our first baby due in July time and then I'm stuck in the summer holiday trap with the other parents, well in a few years time anyway

My daughter is 10......I never go in the 6 week holidays
The school can jog on or send me a £100 fine , a 15/1800 quid holiday is probably a grand dearer just because it's school holidays

Having a family costs!

The gf and I had 10 days in the Maldives in a spa villa all inclusive (inc alcohol) for about 2.8k for both of us!

even holidays in the UK are expensive as soon as you cost petrol in a week away i spend between £200 and £300 on petrol for a week.

That wasn't the question - it was how much is spent per year as some people have multiple holidays as many of the responses demonstrate.

I have to say I am amazed at the number spending £15k and above per annum.
