Which Aeroplane would you bring back into full service?
#62
I agree with that. I was working on some of its flight systems while it was being developed and we got the information on how it was performing during its flight testing from the test flying net.
It was performing over the requirements and had Wilson not cancelled it under orders fron Lyndon Johnson who knew that it was a far more effective aircraft than the F111 at the time, it would have been oustanding at the job and our aircraft industry would be streets ahead of where it is now. We would have sold it to the world too.
I wrote my name on the wing of the first one to fly when we had a comms visit to Vickers and were shown around the construction hangar. They were all working flat out to get it into the air since that was just before the general election which was won by Wilson and they were hoping that if it was flying it would have been more difficult to cancel.
I was so disappointed when Wilson knuckled under to LBJ at the time! He also cancelled the Hawker VSTOL transport aircraft which was well on the way too. He effectively threw our aircraft industry away! Yet another weak and inneffective leader for this country!

I've just thought of another couple of "flyers" that should be launched into the night sky @ mach 2 minimum and without parachutes:
yep Gordon Brown and Tony Blair

Concorde for me too though since I've just built an SR-71 model kit, I've done a fair bit of research while looking for reference pics so I'd have to say it's a very close second.
One of the best stories I read about an SR-71 was this one:
Can just imagine the look on the guys face when he heard that
One of the best stories I read about an SR-71 was this one:
From Dennis Rainwater, October 2007 - I have a (well, almost) personal ATC/Pilot conversation I thought I'd share with you. I was a weather guy in the USAF during the late 80s-early 90s, and while I was stationed at RAF Woodbridge in England I often hung out with a controller in the tower cab just above our office. This fellow shared a story with me that he claimed happened to him personally. I can't vouch 100% for the authenticity of this tale, but the guy was generally believable... Also, a detail or two might be blurred by my own faulty memory over the past 15-20 years, but here it goes: My friend says he was training an ATC rookie - I think he said it was out at Nellis AFB. Anyway, one day this kid takes a call from an aircraft requesting clearance to FL 800 (80,000 feet)...
Rookie (dripping with sarcasm): "Okay, hotshot -- if you think you can take her that high, GO FOR IT!!"
Pilot of the SR-71 on the other end of the radio: "Roger Control; now DESCENDING from 100,000 feet to FL 800...."

sr71, no rpelacement
concorde, no replacement
so techinicly looking forward there the only option,,,, lol
on a more serious note, rumour has it the sr71 was replaced by aroura, however, like the sr71 you wont hear much about it untill its a decade old and less classified.
Also should add the sr71 traded on its ability to outrun everythign that could be fired at it, problem is its no longer the case

Concorde is just a massive loss of national prestige
And the predictable result of putting an american bean counter in charge of our national airline

The SR71 was horrendously expensive to operate, and has been rendered obsolete by a combination of recon satellites and Predator drones, with the U2 it was intended to replace filling in the gaps.
