Hope this is not going to make people think thats what the discs are like on the car belonging to the O/P.
I have checked with the technician who did the work on the car, he states thet he did check the pads as a matter of course and they were part worn and not at the point where they needed to be reported on, if they were worn enough to be like the ones shown two weeks down the line we would have advised new pads whilst the car was on site.
Has the car been on a track day since being here ? not saying it has but it would explain it.
cheers
Kev

Hi Kev, no not at all, no track day what so ever, it was driven back from yours to Bedford that day and then to and from work (in Bedford) for 3 more days. Did the technician actually visually check the pads?, take the wheel off and look at them? As i dont think he could have otherwise he would have noticed them without even taking them out the callipers, you could see how they had degraded from the edge of the pads. I can asure you these are the pads that have had about another 120 odd ROAD miles on them from leaving yours, why would i state otherwise i dont have anything to gain in doing so
Now im sure this is a very rare occassion Kev and the technician may have just looked at the wearing tab on the pad, im not sure what the process is for your technicians on checking brake pads but if its just to look at the wear tab and not visually inspect the pads then this might be something to consider, but as i said this is probably a very rare occassion, ive never seen pads that have degraded in such a way as these. I couldnt understand why it wasnt mentioned to me, as you'd be doing yourself out of money as i would have got you guys to change them. I can post up a pick of the brake discs it you want which are competely fine not lip on them at all, which may have thrown the techinician as these are completely fine!?

It doesn't but still, while brake pads has being worn down, the pads go more and more together - towards the disc. Pistons in caliper are then more out of the caliper and there is more volume in the caliper for fluid. Consequently the level of brake fluid drops in oil container and light should came up at that moment. Time for change the pads and NOT just fill the brake fluid and drive on like nothing happened.
