My previous sti had an engine built, mapped and tuned by API. Although I do think 3.5k is a large amount of money from personal experience I think it's money well spent
Knowing the work is being done by an experienced company with a good reputation (a rep they would obviously like to maintain) is worth that little extra premium. You won't be dissapointed mate and if you are for whatever reason I'm sure David will sort it.
If he doesn't you could always put a post up here for some ranting and slating

Well im not a fan boy.
never dealt or chatted with them. couldnt even tell you were they are based.
Wat my point was is regards to a car mickey boy bought with engine in boxes and somehow blaming api in this case even though has no idea wat caused the failure.
Now that is wrong

Not going to comment on prices for builds etc. Its nobodys place or business other than the parties involved. If the guy is happy with the job for the quoted price, good luck to him. It doesnt affect anyone else here so let him get on with it.
Ive never had anything built by API, i wouldnt need to. But i have purchased the odd part from David. Service was swift and helpful and with good communication.
For what i needed, i cant say fairer than that.

jef could you just explain what is so pointless about the post
i bought the car in question from somebody who i will not mention on here.
the engine let go after 2000 miles
david at api was not prepared to help with getting the car sorted atall apart from wanting nearly the same amount of money again to repair it.
as i said jef i didnt want to start an arguement about it i was mereley saying what i know
mapping done by api
engine built by api
engine fitted by api
all work done by api
it doesnt deserve a swift so fcking what as somebody is having some work done by them and spending a small fortune doing so.

So you [ or someone ] bought the car off someone else and it has now gone wrong? APi Warranty is not transferable from owner to owner. It is for parts cover only for 6 months or 6000 miles whichever sooner, to the buyer of the engine.
If it fell outside those criteria we would have talked it through.
So, Had the original owner had a problem we would have discussed the circumstances of the failure and then got our heads together.
That's how it works. But we do look after people that are unlucky, it is called customer care.

APi fanboy here (should declare a vested interest)
Over the last 5 years of Scooby ownership, I've spent a small fortune with APi
- 340bhp conversion on an MY 99
- Eibach coilovers & fitting
- AP 6 pots & fitting
- 2.5 forged engine conversion for a hawkeye with all the ancilliaries etc..
- Servicing and other odds and sods
I'm neither rich, nor stupid.....well actually, anyone who spends that much on a Rice Rocket is packing some sawdust where their brains should be lol, but the point is that I have done my homework when looking around for prices etc...
This is my experience:
APi always have someone knowledgeable on the end of the phone - usually David.
APi always get back to your E-mails.
APi's prices are up font and once it's agreed - that's how much you pay. Some of the places I enquired about for engine builds, for example, were a LOT more vague.
APi deliver what they say they will. David said 330 bhp and torque plus for the classic and it did 338/343. He said my newage would be 450/450, it's 472/480 (and that was measured when the engine was only 1400 miles old).
When there are issues, David endeavours to put them right
You get a warranty that's worth the paper it's written on
Your car is kept and worked on in a fully insured workshop.
I'm back there in a couple of weeks to get BCs fitted.....says it all really doesn't it!

As long as the OP is happy with the service then it doesnt matter what people think.
I've never had anything done with David @ API but if i wasn't so impressed with PolePosition and all the work they do on my car the David would be right up there as one of the first people i'd turn to for working on my scoob.

why would i want a stroker with a vf34 ? whats the point ? rather have oem quality tried and tested sti parts they are perfect for the job .

for 3.5k you could at least expect forged parts though? maybe not required but for future plans and resale they would always be a nice little extra? regardless of what people say 3.5k is alot of money for a standard build with standard parts

To be fair InitialD has NOT given a full spec of parts to be used so maybe the rest of the build will have better quality bits. I can understand why he is going for Sti pistons when he wants to keep the power around the 350/350 mark, it allows more money to be spent on the crank, rods etc.
I personally would just buy a sti engine from a breaking for parts car....
