DIY FMIC Project....
David,
Whenever I do some work on a car (nothing like what you are doing, mind) I always get to the point where I wish i'd never started. However I keep going and normally the end result is more than worth it. The feeling of achieving what you set out to do is a good feeling.....
......and this thread is making you a minor celb. Just get some women in thier underwear in the pics and it would be better than the Sun's diary column
Keep up the good work, I'm sure it will be worth it in the end

I wouldnt mind messing with her.. yeah well anyway..
Ill pull my finger out later this week and get on with it..

Sorry to hear that it's bust mate, especially as it seems like you'd done most of the difficult bits. All looks like a nightmare to me mind. V impressed and can't wait to see the finished results.

Erm I dont have a machine shop behind me... this is all in my garage at home.. Also dont have a milling machine, but If you have a lathe and know what you are doing, you can get by to a certain extent.. its not down to me being cheap.. I have about £7k sat in the bank which I could give to someone and say build me an engine.. but I cant be ar$sed... my hobby was computers.. I now work with them so my hobby is cars... since I am now also banned I have to do things like this to keep me entertained.. I will then use it on a track.. (even though gearbox hasnt got long left!)..
What do you mean you would like to see me fix it... Hands up anyone thats had an inlet manifold fail on them? And if I decide Against it Im sure someone will do a swap, if not ill bolt the plate on the front..
It doesnt bother me spending 1000 or 2000 on a tig welder... if ive got one then Ill find uses for it.. (single phase one I found needs a 60amp supply...) **** ME... anybody got a 60Amp MCB
Spend 2500 on your an intercooler someone else has built... or dare to be different and get figures like Andy has... I think people would go with mine if they has the time / patience / effort / skills / tools..
Also Just Because I have a lathe doesnt mean to say that you couldnt pay someone to machine you a plate with a hole in it...
No offence intended..

Cheers David
May take you up on that kind offer.
I'm going to record some charge temps and component weights once I get the radiator fitted.
I would be interested in the weight of your kit as fitted, my C/C will probably be 'slightly' heavier, depending on the size of water header tank I fit.
Perhaps we can both do charge temp monitoring, under the same conditions, at the same boost pressure, on a day with similar ambients ?
Then it's decision time, whether I go front mount or stay C/Cooler.
You will still beat me on price ya bugger

You must think Im mad.... at the same boost pressure... ha thats a laugh.. Seriously though... I am wondering if I can get some fairly cheap digital thermometers... would be nice to be able to log the rpm pulses or crank position sensor.. and Ambient, Pre intercooler and post intercooler temps.. and log all to a laptop...
Anybody remember using log-it at school... that would do the job.. May have to go and rob a school..

LOL...Can't handle the pressure eh

I actually meant we could both run, say 18 psi and try to get a measure of the efficiency of each of the set ups ?
If we could come up with some 'standard' tests we could also compare with other folks TMICs and different FMIC's
I use a 0.5mm K type thermocouple which gives the instant response needed for checking peaks through the gears. I've found that resistance type probes take too tong to heat up due to the metal sheath. They're fine for fluids but not so good on gasses.

18psi Not a problem...Ill wait and see if scotts new board defends beyond the map sensor voltage successfully... if I run 18psi... should I be looking at water / methanol injection?? Any details you could mail me would be good... John mentioned them probes.. but I didnt want to spend £60 on a Hand held thermometer... I presume you use three probes? or do you not measure pre intercooler post turbo temp?

But the newfound ability to launch at over 9000 rpm without stripping teeth has been instrumental in clinching the world record crown. "I just hold it flat and take my foot off the clutch" laughs Dominic

dont think daves quite there yet
The £2500 I was referrring to was on the TIG. A good Pace front mount kit cost £1000. If you need a 60 amp MCB, no probs, im a spark!. Im not missing the point at all. I too love making things, but if there is something available off the shelf which has already been made to a high standard, then I am now tempted to purchase instead. True, this approach is more preferred as it means the car is off the road while I am modifying and I dont like that. If you have the time on your hands to play then go for it. I did see what looked like a DIY FMIC on a white sti at powerstation in november. It had a reversed manifold and greddy turbo upgrade + motec. What a mess!!!!!!!! While it may have been functional, it was a very rough install. Obviously down to individual people how it turns out. If I can spend a few days at work earning money to purchase things, and spend a day bolting them in, it sometimes make more sense than spending months plodding about butchering and welding. The end result may be similar, but with less aggro and usually less injury!!! and more time spent on the road..
Of course saying that, my main project has only been on the road for about 7 months off and on in the last 5 years,it might make what I have been saying sound strange!!!! You just cant buy bits for all cars!!!! subarus you can however.
