Yep ... only a complete imbecile (like PSL) could think that the article meant people were saving c.£600 per month , and not that the average savings held over a three month period was a total of c.£1,800.

I'm skint, haven't got any savings and each month I'm worse off. I look forward to leaving my job soon as the cost of working will soon outstrip the benefit thereafter I hope to live a confortable life thanks to Petes TAX contributions!

I would have thought that 500 odd quid a month being saved per average family is a reasonable amount personally.

I'm saving around 4 times that at the moment, but i'm scrimping on a few things that I would normally take for granted to manage that...

to put it in context a bit, and maybe make ti sound a little less "ridiculous(legb4rsk - )"... yes, pretty much.
am renting a room off my old dear, and have cut back on my going out expenses whilst i save for my wedding next year.

any property i own has tenants in which enables me to cover mortgages whilst vastly reducing my outgoings...... thereby allowing me to save tory minister-like amounts of cash.

Well that's ok for you but far from average. So you realise that you have no idea what an average family with 2 kids,
average wage, average mortgage & average costs & outgoings would be able to save.Just using common sense would dictate that it would not be
any where near £567.

We have savings but its more avoiding dipping into them than adding to them, sound slike its going to get worse with loosing the Child Benefit and utility prices going even higher, 25 percent on Gas FFS, where does all this money go ?

I feel like that on the money I am on, with no mortgage I should be minted but unless I take out debt or spend the savings we have I cant do much, let alone save £576 a month (unless pensions count) certainly couldnt put that away, share thing at work has gone well so far so not doing so bad versus that average but for most, their savings have dwindled due to the crap interest rates, you put a grand in at 3 percent when inflation is 5 and your grand is then effectively worth £980.

So, basically the savers of the world are being buggered for the stupidity of greedy banks and borrowers, really the savers should be seeing higher returns on their savings and those borrowing money should be seeing higher interest rates to pay for it, at the moment we have legions of bankrups and loads of people doing well as they have an interest only mortgage at pennies a month.

I noticed that, according to figures out this week, the average savings amount has dropped over the past 3 months.

The average 3 monthly savings figure now stands at around £1700 ... which is down on the previous 3 months.

This represents just £567 saving per month per person - which is staggeringly low

The report suggests that people are paying down debt and this is why the savings are being hit hard.

I would be really saddened if I could only save £567 a month - I know I am talking to the converted wealthy of Scoobynet ...... but I find it shocking!

We need to get through to people that they need to save much more for their future .. how to?
Are you having a laugh?

Most people can't afford to save at all, it is hardly shocking that people aren't saving or saving as much when living costs are at an all time high. My petrol has gone from £120-£180 per month and food for 2 has gone from £45 a week to near £80.
My wife is now pregnant and we have started saving a minimum £500 a month and I feel privilaged to do so.
Why start such a pointless thread.

The Source was, as I remember, from ING Direct ..... ??

But ChrisB may have found where it came from originally .... £1783 over 3 months is, by my maths, nearly £600 a month. I could have read the report wrong, but it's not that clear what it is pointing out IMO.

I wouldn't have thought saving £600 a month was at all difficult, in all honesty. That's only £7,200 a year ..... it's what most of our cars cost us!

As a Mr Average, I'd love to be able to save £500 odd quid a month. Even if I hadn't been stupid with my money and now paying the price, the extra expendature would not amount to this amount.

Yet again, Pete has got his facts totally wrong and no matter how many times he's corrected, he won't admit it.

The report says that the average person has a total of £1783 in savings, NOT that they save that every 3 months. As others have pointed out, the average person is not saving at all as the average is down £51 on last quarter!

I think Pete really new that, given his obviously financial astuteness and years of experience.

He wanted to just do another thread of 'look how financially comfortable I cam'.

Bell end!

Mods - I meant that insult in a 'good way' so please don't give me another infraction.

I only have some wealth because I'm old ....... remember that!! Most of you are 30-40 years younger than me - I didn't have lots when I was young, not at all!!!

But, still, £500 a month to save isn't that much - really? I'm guessing most people pay £400 or so into a Pension per month? That's saving!

I do wonder. He obviously lives in an area not too awesome because his neighbor got caught drink driving and his local Tesco is full of Pikeys. Could be a council estate easily.

But he can afford to buy and run his mediocre diesel hatch.

Yes, it may be a Council Estate .....

I live in a Town full of Pikey's - it's true.

Neighbour is still driving, seems I was wrong - or he was under the limit at the station?

Am I dole scum? Well no, I wouldn't think so - I have worked every day of my life since the age of 15 years when I started ..... I have earned what I have, little though that may be.

You have only been here for 18 months .... yet you talk of 'years'.

As you are such a newbie maybe you don't realise that it is not compulsory to read threads from a member who annoys you ..... it isn't actually in the rules - thought I would assist you there

that average figure is arrived at because some save millions they didn't exactly earn, just obtained. Most average people save squat! some less than that....

thing is, there could actually be truth to this figure - I mean, for the average person, 500 odd seems ridiculous.

however, its not based on just the average, working class population, it's based on the entire demographic.

so imagine, super high earners, like top class football players earning £5 million a year - how much do you reckon they put away?

then you have medium-high earners, like high level business executives, investment bankers, etc.

these people bring the demographic average up hugely.

you may have a large proportion of the population putting away nothing, but then there are a fair few people putting away millions - hence why the average of £500 is fairly possible

it is certainly financially wiser to live within your means, save some if you can, and accept that you might have to give up some of the comparative luxuries initially until you can afford to buy them for cash instead of using the plastic friend.

Its an expensive alternative to go into £15K or so debt. You still have to pay off the interest which will keep you on the back foot all the time.

In the days of miniscule wages people learned very quickly how to keep going on what was effectively peanuts.
