Am I being scamed?
Start to worry if they want to pay you via moneygram or western union. They normally say they will pay you your full asking price and a bit extra if they can write the check out for more than the value of the car and you give them the difference in cash. You pay the Cheque into your bank and it clears. you then let them have the car and cash thinking the money is in your bank only for a week or so later to have the bank contact you informing you the cheque was a forgery. You then say to the bank that you thought the cheque was cleared. The bank say it was cleared to draw on but not cleared in their system. You have now lost your car and the extra funds you gave them in exchange for the bent cheque.
shakes head in wonder Gregg you might want to reread the thread that was started by me.

What's the concern with giving out your vin,you can walk down the road and get the reg and vin off most cars now!!!!!!
Or am I missing something!!!!

This is the last email. I dont ever remeber needing the vin number for insurence.
Jeremy said that for Subaru France...if it's a UK model and you're sure, great
but to be able to insure it, the insurance company asks for the licence plate number as well as the model number
and the VIN
sorry.... ;-(
he's on the phone now to insure his Mitsubishi and they ask for all this information...sorry.;;
and then the insurance company will send by email the insurance that must be printed out and carried with him while driving vehicule

Might be a legit request, bearing in mind some imports arent registered correctly, perhaps it's something to do with that?
Personally i'd ask for pictures of her 'Husky' for authenticity. Tell her you can spot a Canadian wooky hoop when you see one.

When I picked my first Impreza up as a fresh import I insured that on the VIN number as it didn't have a registration number given to it at that time.
Don't most new cars have there VIN on display now in the front windscreen??

READ what she is writing........why tell her life story when all she is doing is enquiring about a car for sale??????
Do you tell people what job you do and who your mates are when responding to a car ad?
They could possibly obtain his details, called identity theft....this all happens BEFORE they come with the cash

How eactly are they going to steal his identity? Please enlighten me.
All they are asking for is the reg and the vin number. Remember you can get the reg of any car by looking at it and then the VIN from a simple HPI report or just by reading the number that is on the inside of the windscreen on the likes of VW's. What exactly are they going to do with his reg and VIN?

They could need it for insurance because it is an import and the VIN will verify the model.
The car is sold. I am informing the DVLA today. I have been contacted by email today with them saying that the clutch is slipping in 5th which it maybe but as I drive to work only i am never in 5th gear. He test drove it on the day and never noticed it and everything has been signed. Is that it now everything is signed? I just dont want people who are annoyed know where I live while my child and wife are at home
Was it sold to the guy from France then? Yeah send everything in to the DVLA and if it is the guy in France make sure and fill out the export bit. If he didnt spot the clutch on a test drive I wouldnt worry, up to you wether you want to help him otu with it, he could be chancing his arm.
What does chancing his arm mean? Yes is was the French guy in the end and I am sending the paperwork off today. I have no money to help out and he brought it pritty cheaply to.

I have no money to give back as it will all go on my new car. I sold it fairly cheap and if there was a problem I would have part exchanged it for the same money I sold it for. It would mean I wouldnt have needed to take public transport to work today.
I sold mine to a guy in austria(Landychris) i was weary just like you. It all went well, i have also made a great friend that i will be going to see again this yr.
The pound is cheaper than the euro hence why there buying from here.
Good luck!! I hope it goes as well for you as it did for me.

Well i am surprised, and on this occasion my opinion of it being a scam was wrong. It was nothing to to with a foreign buyer wanting to purchase a car from a uk seller, it was the dialogue she used which made me suspect. Anyway, the man has sold his car now, which was his aim, and i'm glad the sale went through ok.

My mate has recently sold his turbo 2 back to a french guy for 20k cash - all went well but as the reg was null and void in france, the vin number was required up front for when he drove the thing back down to the south of France.
All went well with this one by the way also.
Shame the clutch is slipping - looks like he had more to be wary of than the seller did....
Mart.
