Is Battle Of The Planets considered Anime? It was a cut down version of a Japanese cartoon, which was somewhat more adult.
I think the main one for me was Akira. Got a couple of volumes of the actual comic after seeing it.

Not sure if it's considered Anime but it's certainly has one of the more cult followings. I knew it was originally Japanese but didn't realise it was so heavily changed to suit US tastes.
It's not anime at all but I have all the Transformers cartoons. The later series was never translated and is a fair bit darker in tone. I've also got the complete Star Fleet series which is cool.
Ghost in the Shell is my favorite series so far. It would be hard for anything to beat it IMO.

well i've started watching code geass and i'm pretty impressed. A lot of similarities with death note but a bit more action, so ideal really.

One bad thing about death note was they changed the theme music halfway through. I really liked theme at the beginning but the hardcore death metal they changed to was too mental!
