Yes, its worth pointing out as not many people appear to have noticed. It must be SORN'd or Insured: Even if the car is kept off the road or in a garage. Taxing/MOTing it isn't enough these days.

The new vehicle insurance law - don't be caught out
Stay insured - stay legal
Watch a video on the new rules on being insured and penalties you could face
In early 2011, the vehicle insurance law will change.
If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, it must be insured at all times.
The only exceptions are:
(Looks like they've changed the wording on the webpage to something more understandable since my last visit - as it was terrible. Nice to know my complaints in the comments box was actioned )

What if you bump someone/someone else's car or vice-versa? You always would need your car insurance for that reason.
May be, Sara's car was SORN'd. But then again, how come the robbers got to test-drive it on the road?
May be, her road tax hadn't fully expired. But she didn't need to drive it anymore, so she cancelled the insurance. Perhaps she thought that the potential buyers (or, shall I say potential robbers now) would test-drive it on their own insurance.

I think Direct Gov stipulate on one of either SORN or insured, because they don't trust the drivers. If your car is not SORN, it means it may be roadworthy/road-taxed blah, blah etc. This means that you can potentially take it out for a spin, and bump someone/their car or vice-versa. Therefore, if you don't SORN it, keep it insured.
I think that's what this "SORN or insured" is about.
Fair play.

About this SORN or insured, if you make a SORN (means taking it off the road), you need not get insurance because there will hardly be any chances of you bumping someome, and them bumping you. That's because you won't be driving your car on the road. It will sit static in your garage, or on your drive. Fair enough. But if your SORN'd and uninsured car gets stolen, won't it be a tough luck for you as a car owner, as due to no insurance, you won't get anything for it, would you? SORN thingy doesn't help with anything else apart from giving you a right not to road tax and not to insure the car, isn't it? I disconnected my scoob batteries when it was SORN'd, so that no ****** could steal my SORN and uninsured car. I never undid my insurance on it until it really came off the road and road tax fully expired. That's because I didn't want to be without 4 wheels, just in case my other car had a punctured tyre or something.

The reason they have done this is they were finding it almost impossible to prosecute people for not having insurance because they had to catch them actually driving the car. This change means they can do it all by computer. A good idea as far as I am concerned - hopefully we can all stop paying so much on our insurance for covering uninsured drivers.
Only problem is that it won't help with all the vehicles on the road that aren't even registered at DVLA, and it will probably mean there are more SORNed cars on the road.

I have only just found out about this thread so here goes...not that i have to explain myself to anyone
5 weeks ago my son was nearly killed by a driver using a sat nav and as his named driver i was able to use his rental car as he cant drive with his injuries. I had advertised my car for sale just prior to the accident. 5 days after the accident my nan died. I didnt get round to getting the car ready with everything going on.
My ins was due to run out on 11th Feb. I have a semi detatched house with my own drive, carport and garage so the car was pretty safe and at night the hire car was parked behind it but most of the time my car had no wheels on.
I had some interest and some offers so i was pretty sure the car was going to be sold.
I had tax on the car and had been online to SORN it. I did not renew the policy on 11th Feb. The car is Supercharged and the insurers wouldnt re insure it.
I did not let these asian guys take my keys and drive my car. I took them round the block. They made and recieved loads of calls but i just assummed they were getting advise about whether the car was any good. They then decided they wernt going to buy the car after nearly 2 hours. They walked down my drive and i went straight upstairs to get my laptop. (i had hidden anything of any value before they arrived).
My stairs are opposit the front door. I left the front door ajar and put my keys at the side. They must have seen me do this and followed me into the house while i was upstairs. I thought they had left. This is when they took the car. I had no idea it had gone.
They have been seen on 3 different cameras towards London and i had a call yesterday from someone saying they had seen my car not far from Yorkshire. They have passed the details on.
Yes, i am absolutely gutted. Yes i feel a plank, i have lost my car. I was selling it for £8000 BUT i did not give them the keys. They stole them from me. The police said that if they hadnt seen the keys they may have attatcked me or my daughter to get them.
It would be great if everyone would keep their eyes and ears open for my car. I am not as rich as everyone on here so losing my car is especially hard. Thanks to everyone that has given me their support over the last few days. I have never felt so low but i will be ok.
If anyone wants to know what my car looked like i am sure the 'snitch' would happily give you everything you need from my facebook account. I have the settings set to 'friends only' so to see something i have said on there posted on here is wrong. I will be deleting the last 5 people who requested my friendship in FB.
Feel free to slag me off from your ivory towers.

I will put some pics up now. ..
When I sold my scoob, I was intensely insecure of strangers coming around to my house. Although someone had committed to buy it beforehand, they were coming with cash and other male family members to take it away. A 23 year old lovely lad bought my car. I was very lucky that they were brillant people. LOL they asked me if I had a rottweiler inside. I said to them "Yes, he is scared of me, so he stays upstairs"
They stayed for about 20 minutes, handed me the money first, filled in bits on the forms, and I handed over the keys and my car-file to them. My rest of the family were out at work and school, so I had informed my neighbours of the buyers' visit, just as a safety measure. Very sorry to know what you had faced. Hope the barstards get caught and punished.

In case it helps here are the other bits
jackson racing supercharger
*jackson racing inlet manifold
*spoon exhaust manifold
*full spoon sports exhaust system
*650cc injectors
*iridium spark plugs
*injen cold air intake system
*JDM lightened flywheel
*Quaiffe LSD
*Exedy Stage clutch
*Gearbox from 06 facelift civic
*hondata kpro ecu
*lightened racing battery
*Black diamond drilled and groved discs
*HID Headlight conversion
And a full tank of fuel
I had a Mugan front splitter but i dont know if its still on the car. They pinched it with the Spoon backbox on, i was selling it seperately. It is very loud and distinctive but they may have put a standard one on now. The wheels were brand new, no marks, nothing. Interior was brand new looking and only 54000 on the clock. I assume it will have another type r's plates on now.
The Midlands seems to be where these sort of cars end up so i dont think i will get it back but you never know.
I dont know if the car was stolen because it was Supercharged or because it was a type r. Either way, they got a lot of car and i got nothing but one thing is for sure, it wont happen again.

Sorry to hear that you've had a pretty crappy time over all of this. A particularly unfortunate set of circumstances.
Pity you'll have sen some daft posts on the topic - I'd like to think they wouldn't have been posted if the guys concerned had had all the facts and had a touch of empathy.
All the best.

Why not post up full details/spec/reg of the car - someone might spot it or get offered parts cheap!
At least you and your daughter are OK. Have they got house keys and if so get the locks sorted if you haven't already done so. We had a break in years ago and where asleep upstairs whilst they burgled downstairs, did not hear a thing. My partner and our 18 month old (at the time) where asleep upstairs feet from the intruders! It took me months to get over the feeling of stupidity and uselessness (at not waking) and that someone had been in our house and did what they did.

Correct. I was told on SN year ago to leave my keys on display in the house all times for the same reason. Lives are more important than the car.

Lets just hope that what goes round comes round **** that
Hi Sara,
Sorry to hear that you've had a pretty crappy time over all of this. A particularly unfortunate set of circumstances.
Pity you'll have sen some daft posts on the topic - I'd like to think they wouldn't have been posted if the guys concerned had had all the facts and had a touch of empathy.
All the best.
Andy

Sad thing is that all the details were on facebook. The snitch had access to the facts but either chose to change them slightly or the OP decided to do that, i dont know. Sad really that some people actually mean to cause offence and upset in this place. Pretty sick if you ask me. I live on my own with my daughter so a bit of support would have meant a lot. I was terrified when it happened as all my house keys went too. I dont know if my house keys have been sold on or what. Angel is too scared to go out and play. Its a horrible situation, coupled with nearly losing my son, then losing my nan in the last month. Yeah, i am cut up and in floods of tears. I feel very low...but me and Angel are unharmed and thats keeping me going.
I hope the haters are happy with themselves.

Assumption is the mother of all ****-up's!

I have been here 20 years and never a problem so i was in my own bubble of security. Yep, its a wake up call but i didnt really do anything wrong.
They must have rolled my car out of the drive way and its downhill all the way to the main road, thats why i didnt hear them. I also advertised the car will a full tank of Vpower so they didnt even need to fill up!
If you had come on here and posted up about getting burgled you would have been ripped apart for being a **** to let it happen. But i hope you and others can see that when something like this happens its horrible and it does something to you thats hard to get through. I was on my own and its shaken me to the core thinking about how it could have been. Your a bloke and look how it made you feel.
I thought i was ok now you have made me cry again.
