I still think Nokia have left it too late though, Apple and the others have really pushed ahead in this sector with a momentum that will be very hard to overcome.

As an ex-Symbian engineer, it's sad to see what Nokia have done with their homegrown OS - Symbian is a mighty fine OS let down massively by the steaming pile dumped on top of it for a UI, leading to the perception that the whole os is also steaming. I can only hope they don't do the same with WinPho7.

I think its very kind of Microsoft to take under its wing an organisation described by its own CEO as a burning platform

That's your opinion belliott, others will confirm that 99% of the time I am correct.

I won't go into details as to why Android users will be upset, don't want to spoil the surprise.

Fair play

I have a sneaking suspicion that the main issue with Google may be the whole closing down of open-source. There's a couple of companies that have been gagged and served cease orders.( One Company )

Wouldn't surprise me if Google decide to go all "Apple" on Android - now they've got the free development of the platform from Open Source developers, they'll shut the OS access down and lock it all down. Cheap way to get an OS - get the work done for free!

It will then be a paid-for alternative, as opposed to an Open-Source, "free" version.....

Then you've got the Android App store....

Just my take, if I'm honest

Mart
Nokia has only just finished its most recent reorganisation where a couple of hundred people have been laid off, including the closure of the Cambridge office, so further redundancies are bound to be on the cards following this announcement although no new information on this has been conveyed in addition to the statement by Stephen Elop.

Given that the London offices of Nokia are Symbian Ltd. who developed the OS before Nokia bought the company, it wouldn't be a surprise to see these offices closed too - at a guess 1000 uk jobs in London and Southwood (HQ).

The only hope for them I can see now is if Symbian is updated and gains favour with developing markets to become a contender again. Otherwise, RIP Symbian OS.

At least mine was a fact unlike your repetitive dull self opinionated BS conjecture presented as fact!

Either way, this topic isn't the place for your own personal vendettas.

I thought Cyanogen mod was up and running, because they worked WITH Google to please the law men, while still dishing up custom roms?

My current HTC Hero is a Cyanogen based 2.3 Gingerbread rom

I did have to flash the Gapps package seperate

Every time I post you jump on the thread with a feeble attempt at berating me, you never add opinion on the thread subject, it's always Jack this or Jack that, that's stalking. I thought Snidy was bad, but you've taken that crown, perhaps you should ask what drugs he was prescribed.

No he doesn't. I have only posted on a relatively small number of his threads over time, but as I dare to disagree with him (admittedly vociferously) he plays the stalking card. He isn't worth stalking FFS! I can't think of someone more myopic and tedious on the whole of this board frankly!!
