smartphone battery life question

Settings > Wireless and networks > Mobile network (don't have it ticked).
I've now had mine for a while (end of October) and had got into a *routine* with apps etc and was having to charge it every day. But that was with wifi, 3G and Bluetooth all on. Thought I'd see what happened turning wifi and 3G off as they were meant to take lots of juice and unless I need to browse the interwebbie wotsit when out I don't actually need them on most of the time. I also have things on 'manual sync' only.
Revelation! After a day and a half of light usage the battery is still at about 60%! Just goes to show ....

That's what I was doing. But if I'm at home then it's the PC that gets used anyway so no need for emails/web via the phone. And I don't have a Facef@rt or Twatter account so no need there. Any weather forecast for West Cornwall, whether via TV/radio/web/'phone update' is invariably wrong anyway (you need to look at the weather forecast 12 hours before then base what will really happen on having lived here for years!) so I don't have that.
If I'm out and about I don't need 3G or wifi when I'm in the car or walking about so just switch it on when needed. Oh and it gets switched off at night! So yeah, 'smart' take battery but if you're 'smart' you can just use the 'smart' bits when needed .... I was very surprised when I saw the difference though.

I found a handy app that lets you turn stuff off when the screen goes dark - wifi etc. Lets you switch to 2g and gives you the option to turn things off that you don't need.
Could barely get 24 hours out of my HD which was a bit of a shock but now its OK for a few days.
Is rooting the HD really worth doing? Mines on orange and it is annoying you can't delete the carp on it.

Go look at the xda forums, they go and do all this rooting stuff ... Now bothered as mine is unbranded and unlocked. I "thought* I read that you could do one of these temporary roots (until the next reboot) and still get rid of the fish. May be mistaken though ...

There is a temp root option: http://android.modaco.com/content/ht...ne-click-root/
Orange are notorious for their bloatware and their customers are normally the ones to root first.

I had the stock Orange ROM on my HD, rooted and reflashed with a custom ROM and it's like a different phone. Still got HTC Sense UI as I prefer it over the others at the min. Getting a quadrant score of 2126 and Linpack scores of 45.

Well, I went for the Desire HD on t-mobile in the end and it is a stunning phone, battery life has not been an issue at all, I haven't needed to root or flash anything and the android os is brilliant.
Well chuffed with it

I don't understand all the jargon, but which is the better phone and where is the best deal for them out of Samsung Galaxy S or HTC Desire HD?
I am on 3 at the moment and can get either on £35 a month with so many calls, texts and internet usage that I'll never be able to use it all up in a month! Is that any good? Done a search on the web and can't get much lower TBH.
Is battery life really that bad? If I charge it up every night, that should be OK, shouldn't it?
TIA
Clare

Charge lasts me just over a day on my DHD so I just charge it once a night. I pay £28 a month and get 900 mins, unlimited texts, 750MB data, think it's 50 photo messages, e-mail and orange maps (Google Navigation is free anyway). Searching the web probably won't get you a better deal, try phoning them up or going into Carphone Warehouse see what they can offer.
I've no experience of the Galaxy S so can't comment on which is the better phone, but I am very happy with my Desire.

I'm on £30 and get 500MB/month, unlimited texts (I use about 2 per month!), 300 mins/month and Vodafone Passort (cheap-ish calls abroad) (on Vodafone).
Battery life? If I have wifi/3G on all the time then a charge once per day is needed. If, as now, I'm at home most of the time and have no need for the phone to use either then I switch them off and get 3 days per charge (switched off at night!).

Thanks for the answers guys. Well, after speaking to 3, they've put me on a £10 a month plan while I think about it. I could just buy a handset outright and keep the £10 a month as I get 2Gb of data with that - I've only ever used about 24Mb before!
Anyone got a Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire or iPhone 3GS they wanna sell me?

Think I might be getting the Desire when my contract is up in August.
My friend has one and I had a good play with it last week. Very impressed.
I then went to have a look at the DHD at phones 4 you on Saturday. WAY too big for me. How the f^ck do you fit it in your pocket??
Are there any plans for HTC to release a newer version of the desire before August?

Desire S is out soon, mid-april i believe. HTC Pyramid is due about June, which looks awesome, plus there's the Evo 3D (if we get that over here).
All 3 make the Desire looks dated, and that's coming from a Desire owner

Thing I found when I looked at the HD is that its too awkward to use with one hand imho
Im stuck with my desire for another 12 months before im due an upgrade so I refuse to look at pics of the latest ones
