In old money a shilling was 12 pennies or 12d and there were 20 shillings to a pound which was the rate after decimalisation too. i.e. a shilling became 5 new pence or 5p

So 14 shillings is 70p in new money and the price of a mars bar is 72p leaving 2p to be found in old money which is 2/5 * 12 ... approx 5d

hence 14 shilling and 5 pennies (pence)

Yeah, those were the days - no other country, unsurprisingly, understood the system lol

Decimalisation came in 1973, right? Or was it '71? (I've resisted the urge to google it )

I meant the original penny. There were 240d to the Pound so one modern penny is worth 2.4d

72pX2.4= 172.8d which comes out to 14 shillings and 4.8d, or as near as dammit 14shillings and 5d.
