Early in December I did a run across to Dortmund and back on a weekend - Start to finish 1000 miles. In the 06 Spec D Hawkeye 2.5 that I am running currently. It has an APi engine in it.

But at 80 odd mph it is only showing 3000 rpm ish and it'll go forever at that speed as they are so high geared. But try doing that in a Jdm Type R version 3, 4 or 5/6 and it'll be a different story.....

I did wonder if I ought to have signed up for recovery, but that sort of reflects badly on my faith in my guys ability to build engines.

Anyway, all went well AND I got 364 miles to a tankful of V Power, that must be some sort of record.

Yeah, mines on a PPP with a Milltek sports catted 3 inch system too. I was impressed and that takes some doing these days.

I bought it with NO ENGINE from the local Stealers. We built an engine and fitted it. The PPP was on there already together with various other sparkly. blingy Prodrive bits.

lt is technically a Sales car, but I am running it around. I quite like it and I ain't paying to remap a sales car.............

Bringing the 07STi PPP to APi from Glasgow, I reckon I got about 360 to the tank.... it's a very good motorway car, even with the PPP map, foot down in 6th at 80 and it still goes nicely.

Of course, Bob's map was a significant improvement on the PPP map, but I maintain the 2.5 STi PPP's make impressively quick and no fuss cars.

But of course, if you want more out of them, you end up signing your life away to David and the team at APi!

Ok well here's a scenario....

After having a WRX years ago and spending alot on it and doing many trackdays, i was the first UK owner and car was stock, when i sold it was running 348 BHP, uprated RCM oil pump, HKS frontmount and HKS management etc etc mapped by TDI lakeside i had no problems. Sold the car and as far as im aware its still going strong in Herts.

I have just got my hands on a UK '95' turbo with 130,000 on the clock, lots of history inc cylinder heads rebuild by a Subaru dealer in 2010. Its running a polar performance chip, air filter and a prodrive backbox, the rest of the car is stock.

Do i fit another uprated oil pump, i see there is now one that also increases oil pressure going for around £220, or just not bother, and if it does go fit another engine as they are so cheap now as a used unit. The car is only worth £1200 at a guess, it is a clean tidy good running example.

Most failures are down to their owners ( or previous owners )

Either lack of proper maintenance, abusive driving or poor tuning methods.

Look after it properly, have it tuned correctly and use quality oil etc and they are very reliable cars.

There is no need for increased oil pressure of the standardish 7 bar cold; 6 bar hot, that is more than enough to support the engine and increased oil pressure saps power like you would not believe.

You need a modified oil pump, 'cos unless someone has done it before, the back cover will be loose at that mileage and just tightening the rear cover will increase oil pressure.

Don't subscribe to the theory that a used unit will be any good at your cars age, a compatible engine will 1998 at its newest; 12 years old minimum!, gonna be a good one ? How often do you win the lottery ?

Good Luck, David APi

Not a popular thing to say, but in the vast majority of cases it's true, I suspect.

I recall speaking to Knowlsey at Xtreme Scoobies when I first got into Impreza's (about 6 years ago) and he said:

"If you drive it like a rally car, it's gonna break - just a question of when"

Went to a few meetings and was shocked and how little mechanical sympathy some "enthusiasts" have for their cars!

I guess Subaru is a victim of it's own success in this respect; they have a reputation for being reliable, so people give them death and expect them to put up with it, which just isn't reasonable, especially with the classics that are now a minimum of 10 years old!

Whilst not DISagreeing with your list, you ought to add in "ignorance" as in, owner didn't know any better.

You'll be lucky if it's for any more than 6 months though
