It's definately not all about figures. When it comes to cars like these, i doubt any of us wouldn't be extremely happy to own any of them, but i it reminds me of the two videos of the GTR and Corvette Ring lap times. I'm a soft driver, I've turned the boost down as it is too much for winter, too scary.

I liked the RS6, preferred in some ways. I'm sure I'd prefer a GT Porsche in other respects.

I must stop derailing all of Trout's Pork threads and making comparisons with (his nanny) GTRs

I suppose every car can become scary with ridiculous amounts of power, but not all these cars are built for our shady winters.

Stupid amount of money, but take away the power and the GTR doesn't have anything else i crave. The porshe(all though they pretty much all start to look the same), still gets me excited.

Supercars should always be mental, in my mind. Hard to drive and makes you thank God your still alive when you step out of it.

I'm sure if we could afford to buy such a machine, we'd also all some older classic car that the next person wouldn't even be caught dead in.

My next move is interesting as all the GT3s share a common DNA.

I asked someone who owns a 996 and a 997.2 GT3 RS what the main difference was. He said it was simple - he didn't think that the 997.2 was trying to kill him every time he went fast. So the newer car is faster and all together more competent. In fact he said it was the most stable car he had ever driven.

But the 996 is more edgy, more fun and requires ***** of steel commitment on fast corners (100mph flat out proper corners )

Surely theres got to come a point where the previous generation of 911 isnt trying to kill you ! ?

but in the mean time its an excellent marketing tool.

Absolutely - that is what these cars are for

The last of the 911s that require complete commitment at higher speeds are the 996 GTs - the last cars without any form of stability control. They do need tremendous commitment when the car starts to porpoise when you are hard into a corner. With commitment though they are very fast.

Back off and you are done.

I think a couple of thinks - with the accelerator pressed hard 911s have phenomenal traction at the rear wheels.

But this is somewhat dependent on the weight of the engine behind the rear axle.

In a 996 the engine can move around 20mm on it's mounts and so as throttle position and traction change in the corner the car is very sensitive, far, far more than a front or mid-engine car, to this engine movement which contributes to a feeling of porpoising.

Combined with a tendency of the car to move from under to oversteer through the corner - a lack of commitment will lead to lifting and a sudden loss of the massive traction and a horrible lift-off oversteer moment. This moment is exaggerated due to the weight in the rear.

So a number of factors, including the rear mounted engine.

On the new 997 GT3 there are dynamic engine mounts that reduce the flex of the engine from 20mm to 3mm and have a big impact on the sense of stability of the car. That combined with wider front track, bigger tyres and stability management and traction control lead to a much more stable car.


BUT in the older car - in a long fast corner, accelerating from say 80-110mph and you start to feel balance move to the rear and keep your foot planted flat and bring the car right through the corner with neutral or negative lock it gives a great sense of satisfaction.

One thing I like about the Porsche is it's overall timelessness (if that's even a word)
The design of a 911 is a thing that has always, and will always appeal to me, and most other people.

This is a thing other cars can not match imho, look at a 360, looked great when it came out, and the moment Ferrari dropped the 430 it looked old and obsolete.When they dropped the 458 the 430 went the same way,looking old and obsolete in the blink of an eye.This goes for most supercars

However, look at a original 911,a 964, a 993 or any other model of 911, it never looks outdated when put up against it's newer brethren.

This to me is proof that the 911 will always be THE one to have IMHO, sure there are faster (laptimes/topspeed/accerating), more comfortable and cheaper cars then a 911, but that does not matter to me (haven't got 911 base model money, so a moot point)
Add to this the maniac power and RWD of the GT2, this is a car I would do much things for.

I don't think he will get himself on future Porsche limited edition waiting lists

Nice appreciation though - £30k for 10 miles of motoring - and it looks priced to sell!

I know it's not a GT2, but, on Top Gear on the 21st of December, they willl be driving a GT3 RS, Mercedes Benz SLS AMG and an Ferrari 458 Italia on a teip up America's east coast, in a bid to crown the world's greatest sports cars!!
