I see that Meadows has not directed the first two episodes.
It is clearly early to judge but based on the first ten minutes it is more Bash Street Kids than the cutting edge of the earlier films! Let's hope I have to eat my words.

I thought that was awful.
It looked like a performing arts college project trying to get real with the kids. Close ups of a burning cigarette does not make a drama gritty.
Where was the underlying menace of the earlier film (and all of Meadows other films)? Where was the character? Same actors, weak two-dimensional characterisation, or more like caricatures.
I think Bubba nails it - more nostalgic than insightful.
Very disappointing.

It depends what you are comparing. There are plenty of four part dramas that have depth from the get go to when they end. It is not a matter of pacing it was a matter of characterisation. It has lost a lot in translation.
As I say though, Meadows was not directing. Maybe 3 and 4 will be better as he writes and directs those.

Well that was a bit different to the first 2 episodes, first 40 minutes had some really funny bits like the fight but christ what a way to end the episode and leave it for the ending next week. Knew it was coming but uncomfortable viewing. Hope he gets a nasty ending and want to know what Combo is going to do.

We have been enjoying it, think its pretty good, shades of Shameless in places but that is no bad thing for me !
Only thing that stood out is that the flat cap guy when discussing the Commodore 64 called it a games console, nobody called the C64 a games console back then, it was home computer and that wasnt a term people tended to use anyway, even for the C64 console.
