Starting again.... with a Hawkeye

Hate to think what mine would do if we mapped it on the rollers, Charlie would need some extra straps.

BTW.... still on the OEM clutch!
Banny,
The mid range is right up there and certainly one of the best set of curves (taking into account the peak values) I've seen for a 2ltr.
Whilst for different reasons, as per John's strapline - "Eat my torque!".
Iain,
Andy,
There is probably little point at this stage. The map I have from Richard for VPower is absolutely fine.
Stealthy55,
I will see about getting some data to append here.
John,
If you were on a FMIC I would probably suggest it's worth it, but with the TMIC on a dyno you'll always be compromised imo.

My TMIC is fine on Charlies rollers, his fan actually works! Obviously not as good as on the road, but certainly OK to work with.
Your clutch is surviving because you don't have enough torque to kill it, stock clutch cant handle mine.

John,
Try a two hour mapping session and then tell me it's OK. You've already experienced ignition retard just from power runs. This isn't making slight of your TMIC in anyway, just highlighting that imo, it wouldn't be worth dyno mapping because of compromises made in that kind of environment with your set-up.
Regardless of whether your torque kills it, don't you still think that for the OEM clutch to handle 475ftlb is still fairly outstanding - I do!
I love these OEM JDM Newages.

Charge temp is pretty stable there, if we mapped for the rollers I wouldn't see the retard as it would be mapped out. It's always better to have the map done on the road, just that if I was chasing dyno numbers, as you have just done, I would be very surprised if my figures didn't jump up by the same amount yours have.
The stock clutch is doing a nice job, but then the mileage on your car is pretty low and you havn't done a gazillion launches on it like I have.

John,
We spent around three hours on the road during the first day... did you miss that.
To suggest it was all about chasing dyno numbers is harsh. That was certainly not the intention (and certainly wasn't Bob's aim), more to validate the advantage of using a dyno to map and of course to share that experience. Don't forget we picked up both torque and power in the mid-range, which wasn't gained until the dyno mapping was progressed. It was very handy to use the previous dyno runs as a baseline.
I also highlighted the changes made to cam timing, which was progressed during the dyno mapping, to see whether or not changes made a positive effect - ultimately they did. Something that would have proved difficult during any road mapping exercise.
Bob also commented that at the end he tried to add some more ignition (1.5degs iirc) and whilst he experienced no det (the engine sucked it up), it never made any more power. As Bob believed that MBT hadn't been reached, he then concluded (amongst other factors) that the turbo could not flow anymore air, although he believed it was still within it's compressor map.
This was all the interesting stuff from my perspective.
With regard to the clutch...... you won't catch me doing standing starts on this one. That would be stupid.... even for me!

If I'm being honest, what has brought all this on was a comment that Charlie (owner of Surrey Rolling Road) made when I was there last.... "You'd probably get more power if the car was mapped on the dyno that you were attaining the figures from."
Mmmmmm....

That's called "Artistic License" John..... it stops people falling asleep when they read lengthy updates.
You've read enough of my project updates to surely know that's my writing style (along with poor grammar and spelling no doubt).
A dramatisation of a factual event, jazzed up with a little pizazz.

Great writeup, Shaun, as always, thank you! Your's project thread keeps me motivated with my impreza spec c, even not looking that I got a tons of troubles with my car last year.

After the second engine rebuild (new crank and bearings, headwork) and fitting a new MD321T billet, I did some break-in runs for about 500 miles. The car seems runs ok. Then did myself the compression test, it showed 9,8bar in 2,3,4 cylinders and 8,5bar in the first cylinder (
Local engine builder says that my car is a non-stocker, so he doesn't care for my trouble, no warranty! )). I had purchased the Leak-Down tester on ebay (no any for sell here), and waiting for this thing to check where is a leak in the cylinder #1, still waiting for a month, russianpost service is great, as usual.
Actually I am tired of all of these unfriendly stuff that happens in Russia, whatever you wanted to do - it's not easy. I think if I'd live in the UK, I just gave my car to any of respected company, for example API or Lateral, Rogerclark, AndyForrest etc..to get sorted with all the stuff and make the whole project done in one place. I'm sure they do their job great, have all the experience needed, that our local alcoholics don't have.

He won't take any responsibility after 500miles! That's not great mate.
API are currently building some engines for a Russian customer.
I would drop David an email..... dob@apiengines.com and discuss the topic.

Hi Shaun!!
After 2 weeks of on and off reading in the office, I finally managed to get here - New to this so i had to wiki some terms and side track to understand it a little better to get the full appreciation of this write up.
First off great piece of writing! Helped a noob like me understand and appreciate the joys and pain of setting up a balance road car.
I just purchase a 2007 base hawkeye WRX (EDM) in Singapore and considering swopping out a single scroll to a Vf37 (basic search in google got me to your thread). I am inspired to get a LM 450 billet later down the road after my conversion and hoping to see you write more regarding your hawkeye
Many thanks and BOOOST ON!!!

Hi Wally,
Glad you found the information beneficial.
Congrates on your recent purchase.
In all honesty I would suggest that going twin entry/scroll on your car is probably not worth the expense. Litchfield's can supply single scroll equivalents of their LM's, and with your increased capacity they will spool up very well indeed. If you don't mind the additional cost of finding the twinscroll headers, up-pipe and downpipe, then go for it of course!

100,000 + views! I'm shocked and stunned.
To celebrate let's see a few new arty shots:
Time flies and I can't believe it's been over 3yrs since originally purchasing this car.
Being a second car it hasn't had a massive amount of use, what with just over 10k miles covered over that time. It has to be said though, over that time period it's been an absolute utter joy and really has been stress free motoring. Quite outstanding considering the power level upgrades it has gone through. Just goes to show how great these cars can be though if you have a good base vehicle, modified involving the right people and selected parts.
What's next?
Not a lot really...... hopefully "just" more of the same with regards to continued enjoyment. Everything just works as it is. The next evolution would be a built engine, but it simply does not need it at the moment..... if it ain't broke why try to fix it!
One thing I need to do is benchmark the current state of tune (against the previous VPower only data) with further analysis of in-gear acceleration times. Something I will sort over the next month. Will be interesting to see how the VPower and Meth tunes compare on the black stuff. We already know the differences in power curves, but as always, it's interesting to see how that relates to real world comparisons.

hi Shaun

the wheels you have im assuming they are straight fit no spacers etc and what would you consider them to be worth (been offered a set 114pcd) dont want me pants pulling down etc
any updates your end?

Hi Rich,
Nice to hear you've picked yourself up a JDM Hawk - how you finding it?
Wheels are standard 114pcd fitment. Depending on condition (say perfect) I suspect they're worth around £100 each.
No real updates..... as the saying goes if it isn't broke, why fix it.
I took it out the other day, which was the first time in 2 months....... it simply put a smile on my face. Oh, it's just turned over to the 18k mark now.
I did a track day at Cadwell last month in my mates 330bhp 2.5ltr Hatch. We had a great day, even though it was lashing it down all day. I drove his car in I-Mode (the lowest power setting) all day and we were far from the slowest on track. Put's it all in to perspective.
It felt good to get back on track and has inspired me to get this car back on track during 2014.

I would never normally contemplate doing this kind of post on a Project Thread, but at times I think some companies deserve the positive exposure, due to great service.
I need to explain this issue in full detail as it's beggars belief.
Every year since being with Keith Michaels (2009 on my reckoning), I've received very competitive insurance renewals on my Subaru's. At first this was on my previous highly modified SPEC C (600bhp), and then for my current modified JDM Hawkeye STi (490bhp).
Each insurance policy has been fully loaded and not some stripped down limited conditions policy. Fully comprehensive of course (minimal excesses, tax and claims insurance).
Each and every year since being with Keith Michaels I have always put a thread up about the excellent service and pricing I receive. This is for no reason other than I appreciate the service I receive, and feel obliged to thank those involved that provide me that service. We always find it easy to moan, but feel less inclined to congratulate excellent service when we experience it.
So far so good.
Whilst I appreciate that my circumstances that impact my quotes are not going to be the same as everyone else's, that should not detract from the great quotes I receive from Keith Michaels.
I have personally NEVER had one single problem with contacting Keith Michaels, which has always been via Gary (Moley_WRX on here). Every communicate has been timely.
Something I have never done before is actually provide any price details, with regards to the renewals from Keith Michaels. This time is going to be different...... simply because I'm truly taken back by this years renewal.
As alluded to above, ALL of my mods are declared (ranging from handling & brakes, through to engine ancillary upgrades to take the car to 490bhp). It's the full monty.
Just to reiterate, this is on a MY06 JDM Hawkeye STI.
Let's get the worse bit out of the way first..... I'm 42.
Last years renewal was £450 inc., which in my opinion is pretty awesome anyway.
I contacted Gary this morning and received a renewal quote within a few hours....... for £295!!
Again just to be clear, that is like for like with my current policy.
This denotes a 34% DECREASE on what I thought was previously exceptional value.
I still can't believe it and hence this posting in the manner that has been presented.
That's £295 fully comp on a 490bhp JDM Hawkeye STI! That has to be the deal of the year surely.
Thanks to Gary and Keith Michaels.

Shaun it was actually on TV the other week that insurance companies are going to be dropping their insurance premiums this year on cars which is a good thing in this climate at the moment it looks like you have made a cracking saving this year over the previous you will have to get some more mods done

WOW!?!??! What a price, I tried KM a couple of times but they couldn't touch what I was getting elsewhere for my hawk, think my age had something to do with it (was 27 when I got the car nearly 5 years ago). Think this year shall give them another try and see what they can do, top marks
