Yoza, if you think they don't dazzle then you're an idiot. I got really fed up with Scoobs driving behind me with their fog lights on when in my Elise.

Question : Why do you have them on when it isn't foggy? I hope it isn't because you think it looks cool.

They aren't driving lights, because they would be even brighter and MORE dazzling. They would only work with main beam as well.

My impression is that people who drive with their foglights on when it's not foggy are t0ssers, and that seems to be quite a common view on here. Driving back into London late on Sunday night, got held up a couple of times by idiots driving really slow, and when I did finally get past them ... guess what? Yup - foglights on.

I just want to stop them and ask: WHY do you do it? Is it because you think it looks cool? Well it DOESN'T.

As said earlier it is the beam patrern of the light that defines the type, which then defines how they should be wired and when used. Simply wiring foglights to high beam doesn't make them driving lights - it makes them badly wired fog lights.

The last time this came up (about 10 mins ago ) someone did a calculation. If you look at the effective range of the fog light(20yards absolute tops ?) and calculate how quickly you cover the distance at say 70 mph. It gives you a fraction of a second to react to anything they pick out. I hope I'm not on the same road as anyone is concentrating soley on the patch of raod between 5 and 20 yrds in front of them - night or day

My granny used to drive around with her foglights on.

It is bad driving and proves a complete lack of consideration to other road users. Should be punished with a retest.

However, I think there are lessons to be learned by car manufacturers.

Lesson 1. Make true foglights only available when using sidelights and not in conjunction with dipped headlights. Ok so you will still get some berks who run around in daylight with their sidelights and front fogs on "'cause it looks kewl" and they shoot press pictures of cars like this so it must be a good thing to try and copy.

Lesson 2. When it is dark, it appears that some drivers like to see the road 2m in front of them illuminated by their foglights. Perhaps these were the same people who struggled to give up their comfort blankets and still occaisionally find themselves sucking ther thums - by mistake. Occasionally. For these motorists, perhaps the carmanufacturers could design their headlights that to throw a little more light onto the road just in front (perhaps with a small sacrifice in the long range ability). This 'may' provide the desired comfort-blanket effect and 'could be' less dazzling than the light emmitted by foglights but I suspect that the reflected light that bounces backup from a wet road would not be welcomed either.

In summary, fog lights on when it is not foggy is an antisocial behaviour.

It may be several degrees less serious than driving whilst knackered or using a mobile phone but it is still wrong.

I am not going to drive with my fogs on unless its foggy!!
I admit I thought it looked cool,my fog lights are the biggest Ive ever had ,so wanted to show them off!
I wasnt going to wire them up to the main beam!I cant wire a plug!
I have put some insulation tape over the switch,to remind myself.
I will contact the local meterological centre when its foggy,just to confirm,that it is actually fog.
I am sorry if I have upset,or raised any blood pressure,during the last two days.
I am now enlightened(sorry for the choice of words)and feel like a better person.
P.S dont reply any more......coz I dont want this to go back to the top,dont kick a man whens hes down,and all that!

There's two answers to that.

1) Yes they have, but they are continually having to stop people flouting the law, right in front of their faces, time and time again.
Technically, Its driving without due consideration to other road users and/or failing to observe the correct lighting practice, under the 1989 Vehicle lighting regulations...maybe 1998..cant remember.
If you break the law and get done, take the pain. Ive occasionally gone faster than I should have ,I ve been caught, driving
safely though ( in my eyes). But I was over the limit so Ive been done.Simple!
2) They've probably seen you with your lights on, on more than one occaion, thought first time..probably just forgot, we'll let it go second time, thought aresehole...third time...we'll have to pull him and have a word...generally speaking, if the public didnt commit 'minor' offences the police would have more time to concentrate resources on the bigger ones.

PS Take the fogs off and put PIAA's on they'll make it much better.

I thought it wasn't an offense to drive with dipped and fogs on, only driving lights and fogs are illegal.
Deviating ever so slightly at least you get them as standard, bloody CTR is an optional extra??? why????

What I can't figure is why did Subaru not install driving lights instead of foggies in the first place? They did it with the P1, why not all Imprezas? Far more useful.

Picture the scene:

Road Rally car on way back home after an event in the early hours...driving along a quiet B road...car comes towards him with dipped headlamps and front fogs lights on and its perfectly clear out...so rally car gives him the full compliment of 2 up 2 down Cibie Turini Apollos with 400plus watts altogether
..then the flashing blue lights of said car come on and it does a u-turn and stops him...

copper asks why he blinded him..Rob replies cos your front fogs were dazzling me...copper switches them off and apologises

is it just my car or do these foggys only come on with full beam??
mine are the piaa but when i press the button they dont come on unless i have full beam on. i have been in a few situations where fogs would be nice due to the weather/night but i have had drivers a bit further up the road. not wanting to be a selfish g1t i dont put them on as i would need to put full beam on blinding the poor 8uggers. is it easy to re wire????

It sounds like your car has had the fog lights replaced with the PIAA driving lights.
These are correctly wired to come on with the high beam. The old fog light switch is then used as an isolator switch so you can put the high beam on without the PIAA's

thanks for the reply lee, it was not quite what i was after, i was wondering if i could put the fogs on with normal driving lights as i want to see in front of me but i dont want to blind anyone going the same way further down the motorway.

The answer is No. PIAAs are driving lights so can only come on with high beam. They are aimed higher, have a longer reach and would certainly dazzle many many more people than if they were just foglights. There are (surprisingly ) good reasons why there are regulations governing lights, their beam patterns and how they can be wired and when they can be used.

When I was young and cocky I pulled up a Police van that was driving though the middle of Salford in bright sunshine with, you've guessed it, HER fog lights on. The pleasure it brought me has brought a smile to my face on many occassion. She switched them off but said nothing - I'm not sure if she was in shock or just ignorant.

If you get the opportunity to do something similar I highly recommend it.

Thanks dsmith, i think i will have to point them a little higher then as all i am getting at the moment is a floodlit floor thanks for that when i got the car it had these on so i wasn't sure,

I *think* PIAAs have been known to droop due to the single pendant mount so they may need adjusting up.

The Cibie conversions (e.g. Scoobysport) have a rigid mounting so dont suffer from this, but then are much harder to adjust in the first place.

One of the problems with changing the scooby fogs to driving lights is they are too low down really. Ideally drving lights should be higher.

Buy some piaa driving lamps (140w on with main beam)!! they are the daddies... should be about 500 quid with wiring loom
