ERA,

What is even more ironic is that the "supposed" orangemen who march every year and those ardent followers of the flute bands have absolutely no idea about the heritage they are marching for. it is a 2 day holiday period in july that is seen as middle finger to the catholic community at large in northern ireland. 2 days to get blocked and chant sectarian songs.

Having said that the catholics get back at the prods on Hibernian day in August so it is swings and round abouts.

I am sorry to say Northern Ireland will always be a divided nation

To be honest there are divisions in most religions. Religion which is supposed to bind people together becomes the very thing which separates us.

It's crossed my mind a few times as to whether we should give NI to the Irish who may just have a historical right to the place but then lease it back to us for a couple of hundred years rather like the Hong Kong/China scenario. So the Irish might relax knowing it was "their" country but we would carry on as normal.

Because from a practical point of view you would live in a country with a British passport called NI with less chance of being blown up. dl

I have said it before on another thread. I am an Atheist and religion is an anachronism in modern society. I make my own bed and lie in it. Pure and simple. Everything that happens to me is a result of my actions and I take full responsibility for that.

Sure some people might get some comfort from religion in their time of need but scratch below the shiny veneer of religion and you will find fear, guilt, intolerance, ignorance and abuse.

I don’t care if we are talking about Catholics vs Protestants or Islamics vs (erm) everyone else it seems…. Human nature is so f***ed up that violence and death is sure to follow some where along the line…. All in the name of religion... which of course affects me whether I like it or not.... then there's the kiddie fiddlers both Catholic and others. WTF is that all about?

What a sad & FUBAR way to live our lives.

P.S. I don’t care what shape, size colour, creed etc you are. If I like you, then great.. If I think you are a **** you’ll know. That’s the way it should be.

</end rand>

How do you propose to do that then.

Do you advocate religious persecution?

I don't think it's quite that simple. Remove religion and something else will fill the void. It's human nature and ultimately a form of tribalism and belonging. In the same way as it is not the gun that kills but the finger that pulls the trigger, it is the people not the religion.

Swerving off course for a second, maybe this is what 2012 and the global shift in consciousness is supposed to be about?

Something has got to change!
