Anyone had any dealings with this garage?
Has this car had an MOT recently, a lot of what you descrive that is wrong with it would have failed an mot or been advice on the doc. The car sounds like it has a terribly hard life and not looked after and is not something i would want to own or run - money-pit springs to mind
I would take it back and ask for my money back nicely but firmly - the car does not sound fit for purpose and legal to be on the road.

Yeah finally got the situation resolved although it’s not an ideal outcome.
I tried everything to get a full refund, even threatened them with trading standards, but they were having none of it. They argued that it was my driving that had caused the head gasket to blow because I had not checked the water every single day. Obviously, with hindsight I could have continued to top up the water levels every day to make sure it was ok to drive (like the previous owner had to do) but I didn’t know this at the time and I certainly didn’t expect to have to do this, regardless of what age of car I had bought. Anyway, they were still adamant they knew nothing about the head gasket and that it was my fault.
So after several visits and calls over the last 2 weeks, it was pretty clear they weren’t going to budge. I also know through my work that taking legal action is a lengthy process with no guarantee of a successful outcome given that both parties are refusing to take the blame. The only way I could see this situation being resolved anytime soon was to accept their offer of £2000 for the Subaru and put this towards another car.
I had a look at their Evo V and agreed to buy it as long as they could provide assurances that I wouldn’t have any problems with it. The engine is in good condition, the bodywork is mint, the car has 10 months MOT, 6 months tax and there is a lot of service history which is good. I’ve got reports showing when timing belt was replaced and oil changed etc so it’s clear the previous owner has taken good care of it. They’ve even given me his number in case I want to check this out. I’ve done a history check on the car and nothing came up so I paid a deposit and I’m picking it up in the next few days.
After weeks of going back and forth, I just wanted the situation resolved. I’m happy with the new motor, even though I’m £500 out of pocket.
