Dear Littleted
Models from the first 08 Sti's through to the later 330S 'prodrive' models have gone pop.
The 'engine failure due to grey imports or v heavy road use' story is absolute bull...
Problem is poor ecu trickery to get around emissions, and brittle hyperneuticrap pistons.
Product not fit for purpose tbh.
A performance car that you daren't use as a performance car is very ironic.
Or should that be moronic...

Why they have not replaced the piston design/type baffles me though though the new 2.5ltr engine should be stronger due to it being a new unit and not a bored out 2ltr block! Though I would expect the ecu map on the MY08 cars was only a small part of a bigger issue.

Need to ask a question
Have any of you guys who have engine Failure driven it like an old man, with the Odd bez at the lights and saturday morning ?
reason i ask is Im an old Man 40 and married with Kids, i bought mine because i like the feel of them and drivability, but i rarely thrape it just quick 1 min burts to asda that sort of thing ?
Suppose in simpleton terms, has anybody had there engine blow from NORMAL use IE maybe Misses has it etc.
Just intreaged to know what IM mean by driven Hard and what you guys do to them, that they class hardcore, or do most of you infact drive for Pimp Value and the odd bex about.
Sorry to ask but something i wanted to know
P.S I agree there is an issue if what you all say on here is correct, as they have already released the ECU patch so they have already made some mistake and rectified it.

The thread Scooby L talks about is/was this one.
The purpose of it was supposed to be a log of failures with dates, mileage, outcome etc.
Driven hard - it's bullsh1t to be blunt.
Watchdog should be informed.
VOSA don't really want to know - been there already

Oh, don't get me wrong. What they are doing is despicable, but people like Watchdog aren't about getting you your rights. They are about ruining things for others.
I'm not saying don't do it, just that I wish there was another way, and that whoever DOES do it will need to duck to avoid the flying sh*te that's going to come of it.
Best regards, Jeff.

We agree on that
Just a shame that Subaru have the blinkers on and are so incredibly short sighted. I honestly cannot get my head around how they have handled this issue, even going right back to the original re-flash.
The topic will gather pace as warranties start to expire and owners are asked to pay thousands for engine re-builds.
A huge amount of mileage left in this issue.....for sure

I have to agree on the approach here, we need to step carefully, although at present nobody cares to take responsability and Subarus acceptance somethings a miss being very light.
We could however hurt it badly.
And me myself would hate to be driving around in the next delorean,
Now if it was Ford differant matter ****loads of these about masses sold, but at present Subaru in the UK are struggling in my eyes.
id say Poll it collate it and send it on behalf of the forums. If you are bitter at all this and have been on the reciveing end of the lack of support of subaru, and have honestly not thrashed the living daylights out of your car or effected it by changing the air filters etc, then im on your side, but if your blatently blagging a blown engine cos youve pissed about inside the warrenty then ya on your own.

A poll is all good and well Ted but can a poll really get to the facts ???
We have Subaru UK's very own stats as to the failure rate (7%) We also know of 17 multiple failures. These figures are Subaru UK's own figures and are damning enough as they are. The big concern here is the future and what happens when warranties expire.
We also have Subaru's tech statement which in effect seems to blame the owners for the failures.
No poll can gauge the future and the future IMO is where the problem will be much worse

Agreed Mick but if its out of warrenty and your tinkering then so be it.
but if your in warrenty and tinker its void, theres 2 on here i know have Tinkered, as i said above how many others on here have genuine failures though none tinkering ?
I think youll agree people buy scoobies to MOD but at there own risk, its common to anybody that messing voids it, any cars same.
I phoned 6 garages and spoke to relevant service managers in scotland and down south and the general view although no names mentioned, was that most of the rebuilds were from either ragged and Modded Scoobs or Stolen ones. None were genuine Grandma driven cars, where no mods had taken place. im only soaking up the moans and groans here, i dont know first hand the issue, but i did run a WRX-S to death for 13k miles and it never missed a heartbeat and i used 95 and 98 rom mainly 95, same engine diff Map

IMMEDIATE STOP SALE ORDER
ALL SUBARU DEALERS
We regret to inform you that we must place an immediate stop sale order on all of the 2008/2009 Subaru Impreza and Forester vehicles equipped with a 2.5L Turbo Engine produced with the beginning chassis number and later as shown below.
Model Starting Chassis Number Production Date
Forester 701045 2008/01/08
Impreza 523363 (SEDAN)/825183 (HATCH)2008/01/08
The reason for this immediate Quality Assurance action is that there have been several reports of “Engine Knocking Noise” from other markets on vehicles produced after the production dates listed.
Initial investigation confirms an internal wear issue on the failed units.
In the interest of preventing any possibility of failures for our customers, we have chosen to isolate any potentially affected vehicles by ceasing sales of the potentially affected units until the root cause and correction can be identified.
All the other displacement engines and the 2.5L Natural Aspirated Engine are excluded from this action.
Your region/distributor will be contacting you with a detailed list of affected vehicles assigned to your dealership. However, dealer trades cannot be tracked so please be aware of the affected VIN range.
If you have a vehicle in inventory that falls into the affected vehicle range, please ensure that your sales and service staff are immediately notified that the unit is un-saleable until further notice from SOA or your region/distributor.
If any of those vehicles has an unusual engine noise, please notify the SOA Technical Helpline immediately with all of the details and submit an E-QMR.
Should a customer bring an affected vehicle into your service department for an unusual engine noise, please immediately arrange that they are given the use of a clean SSLP vehicle and notify the Technical Helpline and submit an E-QMR.
You will be contacted shortly thereafter on how to proceed.
We are still investigating whether any of the SIA produced Legacy Outback turbo vehicles are affected. If any action is needed on the SIA vehicles, you will be notified early next week.

The line of communication between IM and Subaru Japan will be one directional, the Japs very, very rarely listen to opinion from outside of their own region.
I work for a UK branch of a Japanese company and all communication is one way only, they will not accept any kind of criticism or constructive feedback.
The Japs are like a black hole, information that is requested by them is never confirmed or acknowledged.
It's very frustrating and no doubt IM are in the same position.

Just so your aware I wrote a letter of concern directly to Andrew and I had a reply from him later today.
I know some of you have emailed and had nothing.
One question I had was due to the emissions needed now, he said the new sti differs somewhat under the hood than the 2008 model, I'm unsure how or what maybe ecu is diff or remap
I don't want to publish the letter as I want to warrant his trust and professionalism in his reply rather that **** him off
If you direct your letters to Andrew in the right manner I'm sure he will respond.
I think personal emails to him are the right way, don't attack them be straight to the point with your facts and I'm sure you will get what you need
Worked for me
Ted

I'm just waiting for them to announce that they are no longer going to make these cars. It can be their only plan. To have so many failures, and so many people to know about this issue, but still not sort it....it can only mean they are no longer going to make them. After all, who is going to buy them now?

Pleased you got a quick response. What you have received will, i have no doubt be a pretty standard letter drafted as a result of the many concerns of earlier buyers.
I am told that the very latest cars have yet another map introduced to reduce the risk of failure. This still however does not seem to address the underlying route issue so lets hope your saloon, in time does not become an extension of the already poor statistics.
The 2012 engine is probably going to be the only way to put this to bed for Subaru, trouble is they won't have any customers left by then .
I would have a new saloon on my drive now if i had any confidence in Subaru's commitment towards there customers
They don't really give a *$%£

Ted in post #246 you state "you never really thrape it, just one minute bursts" and then in post #256 you say "you ran a wrx-s to death for 13k" whats it to be. You seem happy to say you ran your wrx-s to death now that its gone and you dont need to worry about warranty. Wait till someone buys your wrx-s and it goes pop after 5k as its been run to death...

I have short Blasts of Thraping , Never hit the limiter, and did that for 13k miles.
Now my new 1 is still being run in, but after this journey i,ll be over 1000, so i should be ok to start the Thrapeing again. I now have a new warrenty
depends how they drive it, doesnt it.
If they mod it tuff ****, there fault. but never missed a beat for me.
And your point is ? have you had one go on you ?

I dont have a point ted. I was merely pointing out that in one post you drive sensibly and the next you give it death. I dont have a clue as to what thraping is. I drive a classic, not because i cant afford a new one, but because i find them the better looking car and imo subaru built the classic as a performance car. As time went past and cars moved on they skimped on the most important parts of the car which is the engine, and instead of making a better car they made it worse. Instead of buying a high performance car now, you are buying a family car with a bit of power and fancy gadgets. If i was goin to spend the kind of money you have spent, i would defo not even look at a scoob, with the known probs these engines have had. For that kind of money id be lookin at a decent german car.
You say about modding it and its tuff $hite if it goes, these car should be able to be modified (properly) to a certain extent without the worry off the engine letting go.
But hey Ted youve got your new scoob and i hope you enjoy it and have trouble free motoring.
I wonder who will be first to start a thread about the new saloon with blown engine..
