I do not know its history fuel wise, it might well have been run on 95 octane, its certainly showing signs of frequent detting, I only have the engine, through a Subaru dealer for rebuild, not the whole car, the big end bearings are also showings signs of premature wear, its a very clean internally engine, so must have had its oil changed at the prescribed intervals.


The big end failure car was after it was in a dealer for other engine related work, an oil leak I believe, & failed on its return home from the dealer, it had already been a subject of quite a few warranty trips to the dealer, the owner then rejected the car, & as far as I know was refunded less some money for the miles on the car.

I thought all UK cars were supposed to be tuned for 95 ron petrol anyhow? I've always run all of mine on 99 just to be safe.

From at least the Hatch onwards, the Owners Manual for a Factory tuned STi states 98Ron minimum

Hi, looking at buying my first scooby once my XFR sells.

Just curious, im looking at a 2011 saloon STi. Sub 38k on the clocks and has documented history of being serviced every 3-3.5k miles. Using Motul oil fully synthetic.

Im aware the saloons suffer from all the same issues as most 2.5's however if the cars only running stock map and an exhaust how reliable could it be at that mileage given its history?

Im thinking the only thing id need to do is get a remap to get rid of the generic stock map?

You're either lucky or not with the 2.5 engine, that's the trouble. If you're starting from a well serviced well looked after car then I would have thought you stand a better chance of survival without a rebuild. I've owned 2.5 Subaru engine cars now for the last 10 years and have not had a single failure to date. All my cars are well looked after, even though they can at times be driven hard.


As you say, get the car remapped if you buy it (by a good recognised mapper), keep the boost below 1.35bar on a standard 2.5 engine and keep everything crossed. They are great cars when they work and the 2.5 engine makes for a lovely daily. I love them!


If they let you, get a compression check done on the engine. Check coolant levels when cold before starting on the expansion bottle and header tank. Header tank should be completely full and expansion bottle between the 2 marks. If the header tank looks low it could be losing coolant into the bores due to lifting heads under boost. Normally only a problem when the boost is increased.


If the car has had the head gaskets done, personally I'd want a full rebuild too as many of the engine builders will tell you that bottom end failure normally follows a head gasket.

Yea a mate of a mate bought a new 2017 RS, engine failed with the coolant "issue", it had hydrolocked on its own coolant! so had it replaced under warranty, he asked ford for something back in writing to ask if that the new engine had been changed in anyway or some kind of assurance that it wouldn't fail again, they just sent him back to the dealer, dealer sent him back to ford lul, I told him, ford will never give him what he wanted in writing, and you guessed it, it has failed again! HG this time and the mechanic believes the block maybe warped too. Its back in again for its 2nd complete new engine. This car has never been tracked or launched and treated like a newborn baby from day one, its just a daily. 1st engine did 15K before it popped, 2nd engine failed after 5K, total joke. He does a lot of short stop/start journeys, this is why he's been so unlucky, as its an issue with cold/hot starts warping the head/block.

I am budgeting to have some money set aside incase anything happens. The current owner is a real enthusiast and the folder full of servicing is mind boggling to look at even in pictures.

Hes never had the head gasket done, he also commented on how he would just do a rebuild at that stage if it was to go.

Seems like a completing unmolested example bar the cat back exhaust. Serviced regularly in the last 3 years.
