Cheers Boys,
Today i had a master classs presentation on Subaru Egines by Foresters Subaru in the West Midlands.
I got it the wrong way round!
They showed a closed block & how it is the short block of choice, themn the open block which was pants & then the semi closed block that tried to dig them out of the Pooh, I now understand after seeing them in the flesh and, having it explained to me.
No 3 Piston has cracked.
I have 3options.
1) Repair & make good no 3 piston.
2) Rebuild the semi closed block 2.5.
3) A new Small Block, which is completely Closed with oil jets.
Forged Wiseco pistons, centre mounted bearings on main thrust. Uprated oil pump & STI Forged Rods. Work with big block end & make good.
So I have gone for option 3, I canyt afford it, however, this STI is my pride & joy, I have NEVER scrimped on anything on this beauty.
Only the best for it.
I have given to go ahead to start & all being well pick it up next Friday afternoon, I 'll keep you posted.

The add in closed deck adaptors will be made of a different metal composition to the crankcase and the overall metal granularity will be inconsistent. The expected result is a different expansion rate of the two metals. That means a crack or as a minimum distortion.
2.5 heads are feasible on a 2.35 with a 97.5 mm bore, but there will be a potential problem with heads of 99.50 combustion chamber diameter on a 92.00 mm bore. I wouldn't do it- its asking for trouble.
The right way is a Closed deck block at 2.0 or 2.1 or a EJ22T block at either 2.2 or 2.35 and heads appropriate to the bore size. That way it has a good chance to work properly.
Might be an amount of frying pan and fire here running 2.5 heads on a smaller [ much ] bore.

In an ideal world, one would seek that which was ideal!
Re-Sleeving is a last resort for us, and only to be contemplated when you don't have any other options.

My first post on Scoobynet! Lots of great info here.
My Tale of Woe:
- 2009 Subaru Outback 2.5i 5-speed
- 64,000 miles on the clock
- Feb 2013 - took to dealer for oil change, told knocking sound is bottom end damage, needs new short-block $3000 - $5000
- Still fighting with dealer over any help since we're 4k miles out of powertrain warranty. Told engine damage result of not having service done. No help as of yet, but we're not done

Yeah, I get rid of mine next month, but in its defence it's been bulletproof for 2 and a half years, can't fault it.
Unsure what I,ll get next but going to look towards Xmas for something on the company car list, pity subaru ain't on quite fancy that new forester.
Now if subaru did what vauxhall do and offer the lifetime 100k warranty that would get me interested.
I can always hope

Hi guys,
I have just put a deposit down on a 1 owner 59 plate WRX (230bhp) with 17,500 on the clock. Taking delivery this week, private sale from an elderly gent.
Reading this forum has made me a little nervous to say the least!! Am I likely to require deep pockets for engine work in the near future? Had a forester previously which seemed bomb proof, hence sticking with Subaru for this new purchase. Wish I had read all this first, the car is nigh on immaculate.
Any advice on checking it out, other than getting my deposit back?
Cheers for looking.

Cheers,

A few words of advice, only use 97 plus octane fuel, check the oil level on a regular basis and most importantly don't mess about with the car attempting to achieve what it wasn't designed for. Follow these rules and it's long odds against any engine failure, at least no more likely than with any other manufacturer's high performance models.
Engine now totally rebuilt.
2 litre bored out to 2.1 on the short block.
The hedaers were shagged complete new headers built.
I have been driving it for the last week and a bit.
I have NOT gone over 3,000 Revs as per Foresters Subaru instructions.
Oil change this Friday then i can open her up.
it feels a strong engine.

Yeah. You need to use about 0.5 bar of boost regularly to bed the rings in or it might end up an oil burner. I had a running in map put on mine which puts the engine under some load.
When Paul Finch built mine he warned me against driving it like an old granny. I was told to keep it below 4k for 500 miles then gradually up the revs to about 5.5 then 6k for 1000-1500 miles. I was told to drive with some boost to bed the rings in. In fact when i had the running in map installed it was revved to near the red line briefly with only 400 miles on the new engine. I wouldn't get to paranoid about it. If its built properly it will be fine. after all race cars are thrashed straight away after a re-build.
hi guys I am collecting my 2010 plate sti hatch on friday (29/03/13) what is the most effective way to combat this re-occuring issue. I dont mind spending a bit of money if i can add power and reliability. Im in the north west if that helps for places to go?
If only that was true, I have a 2010 Hatch STI engine in with ringland failure at the moment, & don't think the STI saloons are not prone either, I quoted on a failed one last week, which Subaru won't honour under warranty.
