Um, just purely out of curiosity, doesn't anyone else think this is about the most pointless record attempt they ever heard of?
the world record for driving a car sideways?
I dont think there will be many challenges on the record, simply because I cant think of anyone who would want to have a record for sliding a car sideways, or did I miss the punchline?
Now, if it was the record for driving the furtherest in reverse, while balancing on your head, and eating a burrito, then you'd have something there.

IntegraR,

You have no soul

Why do people climb mountains, why do people swim the Channel etc. Because the challenge is there etc.

Didn't Simon say that he was going to do the challenge blind-folded ?

Cheers

Hi Simon. There's more to this than meets the eye! Which actually makes it all the more fascinating. It appears that the technical problems, though challenging, can be solved.

But what about you?

Are you going for it without a dress rehersal? You've done 15 minutes before, which suggests you could go on indefintely, but can you?

A badly timed f@rt could ruin it. Does Mark f@rt? Best to check. Does he tell jokes unprompted? Are you sea-sick? And when you get into the one hour-plus area all sorts of body/mind problems come to the fore. Concentration, numb legs, dying for a ***?

Please have a dry run first (pun intended!)

Did someone call???

SDB - why not do it on a motorised unicycle then no diff worries......

Re IntegraR's comments, Gray, pot calling the kettle black - if you cast your mind back to posts a couple of months ago we know you spend ALL your spare time badgering Subaru dealers for test drives when you have no intention of buying mate

Go for it Sideways de Bonkers...

Pointless? I'll tell you pointless... From today's Torygraph:

"The parents of a five year old Lebanese boy are encouraging their son to smoke in the belief - no doubt mistaken - that the Guinness Book of Records will honour him as the world's youngest smoker.

Abdel Karim al-Ali started smoking at the age of three. His parents are reportedly "dazzled by their son's achievements, for his is so skilful in smoking all kinds of cigarettes".

Cool

Simon,

Depending on which model Scoob you will be using!

John made the point about the small pinion gear in the diff failing due to the diff overheating. Has any one thought about the viscous coupling? I would have thought that limiting the slip for such a long time would cause massive heat generation and lead to the coupling failing. This would probably leave the car with open diffs or intermittently locking diffs giving very dodgy handling.

Yeah! What a pointless idea Simon! I think you should go read some books or get into Hornby Trains. Or perhaps continue to do what you enjoy, after all what would you normally do on a sunday?

Integra R clearly goes to church, oh holy one
!

Mr debonkers Sideways,

Just wanted to add my words of encouragement to you in this attempt,

There are people who post on this board with far more technical knowledge in car design, technical limitations etc than i have my self (Prodrive, JohnF,etc) but i will help in any way i can

Do you want some Mars bars? For energy purposes, as a mate works there and get as many as we (you/anyone!)wants not limited to Mars bars but any Mars product!

I am also an electrical bod so if you want anything wired up temp Sensors/speed sensors anything designed, give me a shout i'll se what i can do.

Will this attempt be behind closed doors or will a limited number of us be able to attend, offer support/ throw bags of crisps at you?

Mark

I might be able to shed light on IntegraR's problem... His username implies he's happy with front wheel drive cars... however, as we all know, you can't actually hold a controlled powerslide in a front wheel drive car... hence lack of interest in said activity.

FWD requires a combination of handbrake, lift off oversteer and maybe a bit of left-foot-braking to produce the _illusion_ of a powerslide.

Mind you, with regards to mountain climbing etc... When you hear people saying you have to climb mountains _because_it's_there_, remind them that an elephant's backside is there, it doesn't mean they have to climb up it!

Okay, okay, Ill add some positive and very useful advice, Deep Heat.
You ever sat watching hours of telly when your chair isnt facing directly towards the telly? you get a crick in your neck that hurts like hell!!
Now, if you're going to be staring down the track while going sideways (as rediculous as I find the idea ), you will want to ensure you dont get a damaging neck crick, or it could spell disaster for the attempt.
So there, everyone happy? Im a contributor to the driving sideways world record attempt.
Oh, Ronaldo, church? not me matey, if Im ever unforuanate enough to get married, then Ill go into one, until then, I stay away, keep having smoke coming off my feet, and horns popping out of my head everytime I go near one

Simon
Just had a chat with my friend at Coventry University. He thinks you're nutter. He reckons the diffs may hold out but more likely they will go bang. If you're going to be doing it for a couple of hours or more maybe disconect the front diff or do it in a rear wheel drive car. Either way it is still likely that the diff will not hold out unless you fit an uprated one.

Best of luck anyway.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the info mate...

2 things..
Does your friend know what surface we are working on? The friction level is around .5 MU (sp?). There is also a shed load of water flying around, and all 4 wheel will be spinning.

I don't know much about mechanics, but I really feel that the wheels will be doing very similar speeds if not exactly the same.

Cheers

What date are you doing it?

I'll probably see him next monday and quizz him a bit more. He's mentioned a guy who has done some similar research on the subject and will try to get an opinion from him.

Question

This may have been posted previously, but is there a current record you are trying to break, or just setup a new one? If the former, when / where / who / what car...?

Having spent all of 2 mins with you in my car going sideways, I think your'll do it no probs..

Hi Chaps

Dates..

testing within the next couple of weeks...

If all goes well the big day within a month or so of now...

There is no record as yet, which is why it took so long for Guinness World Records to approve it.

thanks for the vote of confidence Nimbus

Cheers

Simon,

could you not just set the car up in a four wheel drift, then all the wheels will be pointing in the same direction, and will be turning at the same angular velocity, thereby eliminating slip in the diffs.... in fact if you were to use this method, you could even weld up the diffs, but it wouldn't be any fun until you setup the 4 wheel drift, which will itself be an interesting thing to do....

Failing that, perhaps it would be possible to uprate the diffs. The front and rear could be replaced by Quaife ATBs and the centre by an uprated STi item, then you could fit diff oil coolers just in case it gets hot.... maybe go for one of those huuuuuge jobs to replace the AC rad? Alternatively you could try to borrow a Prodrive active WRC transmission... but that may disqualify you

Fuel may be an issue, but you could get a large fuel cell, IIRC you can get up to 130 litre bags...

Cheers,

Pat.
