You need to talk to a day in day out scooby engine builder Tom. Cost wise the 2.1 kit is not far off what the 2ltr build cost would be unless it's mates rates.

You really need to decide what you want from it first of all.

If your gonna keep it then a good strong build, if your going to ell then obviously the cheapest way possible.

And then if you keep are you going to mod it any more, or just leave it as is, I personally would go for the 2.1 with a nice middle of the road map, and just enjoy it.

Hmm, depends.

You'll need to factor in new oil pump, oil modine, gaskets and seals etc. From yours throwing a rod im guessing your crank is also funked.
So you'll need a block, crank, rods, pistons, bearings, cam belt kit. Heads will ideally need decking flat too. Then an aftermarket ECU to set it up properly.

Realistically to do it in any state worth keeping id say it would be about 4-5 grand. That gets you a new motor fully built, in and mapped. You could go down the 2.5 route with an OEM 2.5 short motor coming in at about £1500. Then you need to add the above to that.

Your call really mate.

Tom I got your Pm but I can't add anymore than Frayz mate. I feel gutted for you really I do but in all honesty I don't think it's financially viable. Your best bet is a cheap swap out like G-man did and sell it. Breaks your heart but you could buy Dazza's car for a lot less than the cost to rebuild yours and it still wouldn't be as good, **** me you could buy mine instead of a rebuild @ 4-5k! 5k would get you into a tidy Bug wrx or even STi but I doubt these figures are even in the running.

I wouldn't be beholden to a 15 year old car that needed the purchase price all over again, however limited it was, just to get it back to standard. Tbh I would be asking Dazza to talk to Paul at Extreme. He came to the rescue with a good replacement when his went pop, then play on the 555 and get rid.

Agree with the guys mate. If youre gonna keep it then build it and do it properly. If not, get a donor motor and get rid.

Tom,

do the maths, what will it cost to repair, what will it sell for when up and running, what would a broken one sell for.

I suspect you will get more for it with a replacement s/h engine in it, but have not done the research.

Tom here`s the start of your Maths challenge.
SMR engines on e-bay want £795.00 for a recon engine same as yours.
For some reason I can`t paste the link but search e`bay for wrx engines loads on there.

Here's the link to one of the SMR jobbies:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUBARU-IMPREZA...item2eaba06465

plenty of others on there as well.

Would be much easier/faster to get rid of a running car IMO

I'm sure with the knowledge in the ESC we could all cobble something together that would resemble a running engine

I can provide tea and biscuits and plenty of smart ar$ed comments

second part of your maths challenge.
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1607023.htm

Hope this helps.
If you don`t fancy changing it your self add in the price from Mr C`s to change it for you.
Check that SMR might charge you a bit more as your block is Holed. I think it was exchange.
In My head I would say max £1100 - £1200 bill to put your car right and it`s worth upwards of £3500.
Return it to standardish or add in a Map. Or repair and sell as is.
Hope this helps mate

This quote in that p/heads ad made me chuckle:

ALSO THE STI VERSION 2 ENGINE BLOCK IS THE STRONGEST EVER MADE.

Unless your name is Tumble, he should probably add

On a roll now

This means If you break it you`ve got to make more than £2300 in parts to make breaking it more economically viable. I would of thought you are unlikely to make that much in parts. And it will be a painful way of getting rid. A bit at a time and the Messers will descend.
I believe the above is right I`m sure the others will agree or disagree but as I say feel gutted for you and only trying to help.

SMR Engine. I am gonna make this big so it's not misinterpreted.

DO NOT BUY FROM SMR , IT WILL BE A SHINY SH1TTER !!!

Ask Mike about the one that went in FastMikes car before he bought it, not in a million years ! By the time it's been cleaned you will just about break even, although with additional stress veins !

£2k to take away as it. Get Mat to buffty the crap out of it and cut your losses ?Go OTT on the 555 connections.

Other option is to buy a 95STI or WRX like Joe I think it was did. Sub £1800 swap over engine break the donor car and perhaps turn a profit ? You then have the option of keep or sell, Id sell.
