I'll add my 2 cents and say 'd choose a P1, as I think they look that bit nicer, although I'd only buy one that's had the engine rebuild by subaru. Didn't they replace the bottom end with a type R one in the rebuild?

Engines were the same so it didnt matter what bottom end they used.

The type r concerned has it's own website and was for sale on eBay about 4 years quoting 305 bhp,and was known as the impreza that beat the best cosworth in the land. I still have the reg no of this car and was outbid by £75.00 and am still gutted 4 years later. You may well be right as to the power that it can possibly produce , will post video clip as soon as I find my old VHS video recorder .

That one was up for sale not long back, guy wanted silly money for it, was on its 3rd or 4th engine rebuild with around 100k on the clock.

It must be down to the peole who have owned the car then tony , as I don't understand how the sti engine is suppose to have stronger internals than the std uk unit, when my MY 99 uk wagon has done 135k, does not loose/use a drop of oil/ water and after the recent remap is producing more power than a std sti and honestly the car now drives like it was built yesterday. I seem to remember that the sti featured in the video clip above had had an engine rebuild when I was considering buying it, and it sold for around £6700 5 years ago.

Yeah I did notice the price has dropped. A year ago you'd pay £7000 for a dog. Now there's a handful at that price...and a handfull at £12,000!!

I had this dilema over a year ago now, either of these cars will make you happy.Down to personal preference for which one you choose.

I chose the type r and lovin every minute,it would be the same if it were a p1.

Deciding factor for me was the dccd and how clean underneath an import is,no rust at all.

Have you thought about a wrx type R? a little rarer to say the least but it "may" cost you less than a P1 or an STI to insure (and they come in sonic blue )

Dont think they did the 97 cars, they did the wrx type r v ltd in 98, the 99/00 cars were just type r ltds.

Chris you are now probably totally confused I have driven both and advise you to before you buy.
If you drove a good type R & a good P1 and could afford either I would be amazed in you had the Type R

Try it !

it beggars belief

This is exactly the problem I'm having, I'm 23 with 2 yrs ncb and they want £2000 for a P1 or £3000 for a Type R.

So I came to the conclusion that I'd rather go for the type r as they are a few grand cheaper to buy than a P1.

Your quite right Tony........just checked and there was no version 3 wrx type r.

But no version 6 car according to Subaru japan..http://www.subaru-sti.co.jp/product/impreza/list.html

Not sure i have ever seen a version 5 wrx type r limited (non sti) they must be rare as hens teeth!!!

I would buy an STI Ver.VI Type R or P1, I had an STI MY06 but I would buy a Classic Impreza again.
